I've just installed Gentoo 2005 on my desktop, got the network up and running, and got X configured and running with the default window manager.

The problem I have now is I want to emerge kde and kdm. The configuration stage works but when it moves on to the make stage it chugs along for quite a while then eventually tells me that it didn't work (same result when trying to emerge gnome instead).

The error I get is finished with the line "If you need support post the topmost build error not this one" so presumably something went pear shaped but flashed past my eyes as it did it.

I've tried piping the output into nano to see if I can scroll up and find what the earlier error was but that didn't work it just overwrote large chunks as new lines came in so I don't even know what the error is I'm supposed to be posting.

Can anyone suggest how I might find out what the error is?
Have any of you had trouble emerging kde recently?

Do 'cat /var/log/emerge.log' and it should give you the history of the packages. It would really help if you could get the name of the package and perhaps a couple of lines before the error occurs.

Ok that gave me a list of all the times and dates I've emerged things recently.
Kde is there in the list: kde-base/kdelibs-3.4.3-r1

As for the error I need some way of capturing the output of the emerge process. The text flies by too fast to read and piping it into nano gave me a garbled mess. Do you know how I can capture the output so I can scroll up through it and find the original error?

The final message says:
Error kde-base/kdelibs-3.4.3-r1 failed
function kde.src-compile, line 213, Exit code 2 died running emake, kde.src-compile make

I guess you have to set in your make.conf something like PORT_LOGDIR="/var/log/portage" and then check the logs in that dir.
Or you can just try to emerge again kdelibs and check the error :)

I've still not managed to capture the output so I've tried an alternate route. I emerged a few more smaller packages and found a common error message to be:

checking for XML::Parser... configure: error: XML::Parser perl module is required for intltool.

and

ERROR: dev-util/intltool-0.34.1 failed

So I'm guessing I need a parser for the intltool to install and the intltool to install for the other packages that are failing.

Anyone know what I'm supposed to emerge to fix this? I've been looking down the dev-perl list for a parser but it could save me a lot of time if anyone knows what I need ;)
