After successfully installing Gentoo from the CDs (mostly), I am now having some difficulty setting up a fully satisfactory GUI.

I have always been used to the rc.d type configuration files, but I see Gentoo is laid out differently, and I cannot find anything in the Documentation files that explains Gentoo post-installation configuration in any detail, apart from matters of portage. Couls someone point me in the right direction?

I can get TWM running under the XOrg system, and it works well enough - even running Konqueror and KMail quite well. But, of course, I would prefer to run KDE itself. It is installed, but both "startx " and "kdm" just create errors and drop me back into text level. Even TWM I have to get via "xinit --:1" Fluxbox too is installed, but I cannot get any response from it.

I don't want my hand held all the way, but I would appreciate some pointers to the direction best to follow.

Gentoo is clearly a very sophisticated system, and I am dying to get it fully configured!

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/index.xml?catid=desktop

that's THE page for you.

firstly, have x setup properly, startx should work good.
then choose the kde-guide, and you will prolly be set. :)

Yes, they look just the job. I don't know how I missed them. But thanks a lot. I'm on my way now, I think.

I must say I find these Forums (or is it Fora?) extremely useful and full of very helpful people.

Thanks again
