Hi, I have the same problem and still couldn't resolve it. Even worse, my gentoo aborted the installation of kde because of the following: (Here is the error msg)
----------------------------------
Continued dowload failed on this file, which conflits with '-c'.
Refusing to truncate existing file '/usr/portage/distfiles/gtk+-2.6-smoothscroll-r5.patch'.
----------------------------------

I read the replies of this thread, so I also tried "emerge --usepkgonly kde", it says "there is no packages available to satisfy "kde".

I even copied all the packages from cdrom into /usr/portage/packages and set PKGDIR in /etc/make.conf to point to it, why it still downloading?

Thanks a lot!

I installed Gentoo day before yesterday on a Pentium4, from the latest Universal CD. All went well, and I was soon in a level 3 Gentoo installation, with full Internet (DHCP) connection. But there the trouble began. I wanted to do what the handbook suggests - install kde direct from the Packages CD, so that I could be up and running in GUI "in a few minutes", with no hassle.

The handbooks says, if the Packages CD has a portages directory, cd into that, otherwise set the PKGDIR setting to /mnt/cdrom. Since my packages CD (downloaded and burnt only a few days ago, at the same time as the Installation CD) has only three directories - cd2 map and src, I exported PKGDIR to "/mnt/cdrom", exactly as the handbook recommends. Echo $PKGDIR confirmed this was done.

However emerge --usepkg kde then went haywire! It did NOT load the compiled packages direct from the CD, as I was led to expect. Instead it started the process of downloading and compiling 114 different packages!! A day later there are still 40 to go! This does not seem like "a few minutes"!

What has gone wrong? Can anyone explain what has happened? I would be very grateful.

See my additional posting on the subject. If you are using the latest Packages CD, PKGDIR needs to be set to "/mnt/cdrom/cd2". Then it all works fine.
