Hi,
i got a big problem with my xorg-conf.
i own a imac g5 isight (i think powermac 12,1) with radeon x600 pcie, kernel 2.6.16-r4.
after compiling xorg 6.8, 6.9 or even 7.0 that compiled without errors, only the fbdev driver of xorg worked.
worked is not the right word, because only every coloum line was displayed (really not usable).
now i started xorg with the radeon driver and my screen just got black und the whole system totally freezes.

can anyone help me please? i need my linux-desktop...

I am having this *exact* same probject except on a Dell. "radeon" causes it to totally freeze. I can get it to use the generic "vesa" driver but the resolution refuses to go above 640x480. If i start it without a xorg.conf in place then everything starts up pretty well. It appears to autodetect and use the "ati" driver. But when I try to use the "ati" driver it claims to not be able to find the card. I wish I could get it to write out an xorg.conf file. Because there is no zaxismapping this way. Also, the resolution is a bit too high, my eyes arent' that good. Let me know if you come up with anything. I'll do the same.

Well, first of all, 6.9 isn't in portage, are you compiling by hand? Have you tried modular X? http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/desktop/x/x11/modular-x-howto.xml

The drivers with modular X are newer than the ones included in the current ppc stable, you may have better luck with them. For the original poster (on the PPC machine) please try using the fbdev driver, it may work, but without acceleration.

Just an update from my system: This may not work for a ppc user but I emerged ati-drivers and used 'Driver "fglrx"' . No 3d but 2d seems to be fine (although not as fast as whatever xorg did automatically). Which is good enough for me. Just need a working desktop at work.

i emerged the devel version (modularized) via portage. this was no problem. in my opinion it is the latest driver. there might be a new one in cvs, but far away from stable. after applying the patch from Benjamin Herrenschmidt the problem still remains. is it perhaps a problem with the memory allocation (see my bugreport on bugzilla https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6003 )?

who knows. If I were you I'd try to downgrade to a slightly older kernel. 2.6.12 or something. Because at home I have a radeon that runs beautifully with a 2.6.13 kernel. I haven't upgraded it yet because I haven't needed to. At work I installed the latest (2.6.15) kernel. And iwth the "radeon" driver I get the exact same freezes that people have spoke of here and on other threads. The desktop freezes up just as its half-way loaded and then the whole computer locks up. Even if I move to another computer and try to ssh in, I cannot. Luckily the binary drivers worked for me, my next step was going to be a 2.6.13 kernel. Because I've seen some other threads where people said that the open-source radeon driver was working perfectly until they upgraded kernels.

yes thanks. so you really mean this is a kernel problem? does such great changes took place from 2.6.10 till 2.6.16 ? perhaps its the pcie :), but i don't know. the problem is: i can only boot with the 2.6.16er :) otherwise the kernel does not recognize my cpu and locks my machine before the kernel ist fully loaded.
do you own a imac g5 "powermac 12,1" too? it seams to only a problem with this imac g5 version.

I have no idea whether its a kernel or ati problem. but from what I've seen searching aroudn it appears to be that something changed in the kernel after 2.6.13 that didn't agree with some radeons.

mac? no, thats the weird part, I've got a dell (dude). But it looks like enough other people have had this problem with the x600 pcie card that it is a kernel/ati problem. Thats an odd problem you have, with the hard locking.
