Hi!

I would like to try xgl on my notebook. I have a ATI Radeon 7500 (32 MB) and I think it is R200 ?? on a Thinkpad R40.
Since I found no working ati-driver I am using x11-drm with successfully. I get:
$ glxgears
3354 frames in 5.0 seconds = 670.800 FPS
3589 frames in 5.0 seconds = 717.800 FPS
3587 frames in 5.0 seconds = 717.400 FPS
2867 frames in 5.0 seconds = 573.400 FPS
1646 frames in 5.0 seconds = 329.200 FPS
1666 frames in 5.0 seconds = 333.200 FPS

I checked the http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_XGL for ATI and of cause my chip is not listed there at all (is it to old?)

So the question is, is there any chance to use xgl on my machine? :?

Thanks!!!

First of all, I think this thread should be in unsupported.

Second, I am pretty sure that there are working ati drivers for the Mobility 7500 (I have one too in my laptop, but at the moment I'm not running Linux on it, so I can't say what drivers, sorry). I'm not sure if Xgl will work without the ATI drivers, but you could always try and if it works/doesn't work you could give feedback to the people that made the gentoo HOWTO and they will list your card.

Good luck!

I have a Radeon 7500 Mobility in my T40 also. It is not an r200 based card, it is an r100 based card. There are no ATI drivers for it (they only support 8500 and up), the DRI drivers do work quite well though, in my experience.

You should be able to get quite a bit more speed out of the card if you set your desktop to 16-bit colour, enable S3TC, and use driconf (in portage) to enable Hyper-Z. In glxgears I get around 2400 fps.

IIRC, XGL currently does not work with the DRI drivers, but support should be coming soon. The DRI drivers are missing some of the requisite features for XGL to work.

i would like to add, I too have r200 (R 40e laptop). and i am too wishing to get XGL for me.

so as said here, dri wont give xgl and no ati's fglrx driver support for r100 and r200, (this sucks). what should we do now? is there some way to get source files of ati's driver and somehow compile it into workable driver?

i installed gentoo on my laptop for sole reason of getting xgl.

i am glad i found this thread out, but regarding my story, i havent been able to install xorg7 at all due to my noobness. i have made package.unmask and dumped all module apps listed at /usr/portage/profile/package.mask .

doing emerge -s xorg shows me x11-xorg7-rc1 in list (but 0 kb ) and when i do emerge xorg it says no ebuild found, i am like screwed and cant find out anything. can anyone help?

(gotta make a thread my own thread about this).
