Total file size: 116679180 bytes
Total transferred file size: 6654587 bytes
Literal data: 6654587 bytes
Matched data: 0 bytes
File list size: 3196500
Total bytes written: 66281
Total bytes read: 10000663

total size is 116679180  speedup is 11.59

>>> Updating Portage cache:  100%

 * IMPORTANT: 29 config files in /etc need updating.
 * Type emerge --help config to learn how to update config files.

 * An update to portage is available. It is _highly_ recommended
 * that you update portage now, before any other packages are updated.
 * Please do so and then update ALL of your configuration files.

If it is the "Updating Portage cache" part of it that takes a long time then, yes, that is "normal". At least until the new version of portage is marked stable. I have a 6megabit internet connection so the actual rsync part of the operation flies by, but the updating portage cache part can take several minutes.

There are a LOT of posts about this in the forums by the way.

Yes, it's "Updating Portage cache" - it usually hangs on 50/51% for maybe at least 5 mins and overall is quite slow ...
