I've been using Gentoo on a number of machines, including a desktop, for several years now. But, my life has gotten busier, and I don't have time to track down solutions to the problems that pop up nearly every time I update a big application - god save me from another gnome or openoffice emerge!

Consequently, I was thinking of switching the desktop (and a laptop) over to Ubuntu. What do gentoo users think of Ubuntu? Would it make sense for the desktop and laptop?

Thanks.

Every time an update (x86, not ~x86 mind you) seriously breaks things, or I get tired of waiting hours for stuff to compile, I wack Gentoo and install Ubuntu server, then the minimum required for Fluxbox. (I backup my important Gentoo files first) Then I'll use Ubuntu for a few weeks until something stupid there ticks me off, then it's back to Gentoo. (the last time it was the kernel package *requiring* that Bluetooth software be installed. Try to remove bluetooth and it will try to uninstall your kernel...) I've lost track of how many times this has happened. I've gone through all the major flavors of Linux and keep coming back to Gentoo. However, if you can live with what the Ubuntu devs decide are *required* packages, then it is a good distribution to use. (I seem to remember that the dm, lvm, and evms packages are also required by the kernel package in Ubuntu)

Moved from Gentoo Chat to Duplicate Threads in favour of Ubuntu vs Gentoo and Laptop Distribution options (NOT for old laptops)?
