Hey all,

I've only been using Gentoo for a couple of days now and I like the Portage system a lot.

The only thing that's concerning me is this. When emerging a large package with multiple dependencies, I'm not going to be at the keyboard all the time. I'll be leaving the PC overnight, for example.

But, I've noticed that sometimes the compilation process will print out important messages/warnings to draw your attention to stuff, eg. the need to run python-updater or revdep-rebuild.
If I'm not at the computer, I'm going to miss that kind of message. Is this a problem? Will it leave the system in a perilous state? As a newbie, I don't instinctively know how to check when this kind of thing is needed.

Thanks again,

Mike.

You can keep a log of everything that goes on by setting PORT_LOGDIR in /etc/make.conf.
For example,

Code:
mkdir /var/log/portage
add PORT_LOGDIR="/var/log/portage" to /etc/make.conf

But I wouldn't worry too much about it. If something breaks, you'll probably know it.

You might like to take a look at portlog-info from the Gentoo Experimental Script Repository...

I use the -s (read the script help [-h]) with this often to make sure I have not missed any important messages that might have scrolled past during an emerge...

This, along with the PORT_LOGDIR info supplied by Vanquirius should get you well on your way..

Please note that the script is from the Gentoo Experimental Script Repository.. it works fine for me, but your milage may vary !! Use with care..

Moved from Portage & Programming to Duplicate Threads in favour of Log of emerge readable output produced somewhere?
