Starting X gives the following error
Code:
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

http://wiki.x.org/wiki/FAQErrorMessages states that the most likely cause is that video modes used in the config file are not supported, but xorg.conf was generated by Xorgautoconfig. Also looked at the PPC FAQ, but I'm stumped.

Don't know if it's related, but after I built the kernel an "emerge --sync" downloaded r1 when the CD contains r5 of the 2.6.15 kernel.

I had problems getting X to work on 2006...I copied my config from a 2005 installation but X would not start. In the end I got it working by running X -configure

Please give Xorgautoconfig a try:

Tried using X -configure but got a FBDEV error.

For convenience, I was trying to build a complete system for a B&W G3 on my MDD G4, which I believe should be fine. Pretty sure it wasn't a 2006.0 install CD problem, but couldn't fix the X problem. Thanks for your time on IRC JoseJX - much appreciated. The good news is that X starts fine when the HD is put into the G3.

Unfortunately, I can't yet get the B&W to boot from the HD, but that's another problem.
