Hi!

I am a Gentooist for quite a while now and use it on my Laptop and Home Server/Working horse with great pleasure and success. A few months ago a friend gave me a strange thing, it is called "Beige G3" or "OldWorld" Mac as I learned in the meantime.

The little box came with MacOS 8 installed but I wanted to take a look at OS X and therefore ripped the old HD out of it, put a new 80 GB disk in and installed OS X 10.2.8 (which I purchased at Ebay) without major problems. A Radeon VGA card and (again, donated) a PCI UDMA ATA controller later I must say that I like OS X but a machine with enough power to enjoy the artwork, design, usanbility and multimedia stuff is simply to expensive for me. Hey, they just released this new MacBook for 2600 Euros in Germany. 2.6k EUROs for a laptop, come on! I know there are people out there who really buy this, but I would buy two *whatever* laptops and put Gentoo on them for the same money.

Ok, back to my problem :-)

I wanted to install Gentoo on my oldworld G3 but I found out that I need the Classic Mac OS environment to start BootX for that, correct? Well, I wiped the old Mac HD and have no way to get a new MacOS 9 CD or whatever from a friend. Ebay says it wants approx. 30-40 USD for a MacOS 9 CD, which is quite a lot for an outdated OS (ye gods, there are guys who want 600 USD for a 400 Mhz G4 ... 400 Mhz!).

Any chance / howto / step by step instructions telling me how to install Gentoo on my oldworld Mac without a copy of MacOS 8/9 ? Booting from the Gentoo 2006.0 CD seems impossible. I wonder if there is a chance to net boot this ugly monster?

Thank you for any hints you can give me,
kind regards,

Heiko

Not really. You could try booting the debian boot disks, and install from that environment. You'll also need to setup quik once the install is complete. Apple also offers MacOS 7.5 for free, that may work too.

i, not sure if 7.5 could handle your machine..

however, i would look for a system 8 disk rather than 9.... all 9 will do is take up more spce, and most likely cost more... 8 should not be too hard to get a hold of, in one way or another....
