Hi all.
I'm a very basic user, nonetheless I have a question blinking in my mind since months now.
Among the official, stable gentoo ebuilds a number of them if quite behind the latest releases.
I mean:
- KDE is v3.4.3 while latest is 3.5.1 since Jan 31st
- Firefox v1.0.7 while latest is 1.5.0.1 since Feb 1st and v1.5 is out since Nov 29th 2005
- PostgreSQL v.8.0.4 while latest us 8.1.3 since Feb 12th and v8.1.0 is out since Dec 13th 2005
among the more notable ones.
I understand that everyone is working here for free and that things get fixed when there is time and resources for them.
Nonetheless, in my humble opinion, I think that those packages could be considered quite important.
I'm far from pushing for releases, but I'd like to know the reasons for these somewhat relevant delays.
Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Firefox 1.0.7 is the stable release, 1.5.0-1-r2 is the latest unstable release. If you want to use the latest release of everything in portage, edit /etc/make.conf and put the line ACCPET_KEYWORDS="~x86" in there. Then run emerge -D world.

All the packages you have mentioned are all availabel in portage right now. If you want to use them, you just have to use the "testing" ebuilds. This should not discourage you as 99% of the time these version are fine. The ebuilds exist and usually the only reason they aren't marked as stable is because there aren't enough people to test them or the package is too critical to rush to stable before stamping all, even insignificant, problems. I use these testing ebuilds every day and I have a very stable system. I can vouch for KDE and Firefox myself.
