PostPosted: Sat Mar 11, 2006 12:40 am    Post subject: Quicksilver G4, "Cannot open root device" (solved) Reply with quote

The first time I tried to boot after installing, I got a "No such device or address" when init tried to mount /. Now, no matter what I change, I just get:
Code:
VFS: Cannot open root device "hda10" or unknown-block(0,0)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option

I have all necessary code built into my kernel. A previous post mentioned that I should have drivers for all devices listed by lspci, so I removed my AirPort Extreme card (and built drivers for everything else), but that didn't help. I've tried rootdelay, and it didn't change anything.
I'm using a dual 1.25(?)GHz Quicksilver G4 with a Radeon 9000 and 256MB of RAM.

Please, post "/sbin/mac-fdisk -l" output and /etc/yaboot.conf for more detail.

Sorry for the delay. I was on vacation.

(macosx is commented out until somebody figures out how to handle more than one OSX install from yaboot)

For fun, /etc/fstab:

shm                     /dev/shm        tmpfs           nodev,nosuid,noexec
0 0

I know binds work reliably; my server has a bunch of them.

The installation instructions recommend setting the bootstrap partition to /dev/hda2. Use mac-fdisk to re-order and amend yaboot.conf to reflect the changes. Pesonally, I'd comment out your /dev/hda11 mounts in /etc/fstab until you've got the boot sorted.

I've used the macos as well as macosx labels to boot OSX. You've also got the darwin and bsd yaboot labels available, although I haven't tried using them, However, I can't see why they wouldn't also work.

On all of my other PowerPC machines, my bootstrap is at or above partition 8. (that's a G5, a Clamshell iBook, a Powerbook G4 Titanium, and even briefly a Powerbook G3 Wallstreet) The problem isn't the bootstrap anyway, it loads the kernel fine (which would seem to me to mean it got the correct partition for both the bootstrap and the root) but the kernel then fails to mount the root partition.
I'm going to try installing a later kernel and see if that helps. I had a problem like this on my first server when I formatted the disk with the 2.6 kernel on the LiveCD but then tried to mount it with the 2.4 kernel I installed.

Edit: Sometimes, when I try to SSH into that machine running off of the LiveCD, I get:
