So I tried using these ebuilds, but when I say modprobe bcm43xx, it gives me
Code:
FATAL: Error inserting bcm43xx (/lib/modules/2.6.16-rc3/net/wireless/bcm43xx.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)

In dmesg it says:
Code:
bcm43xx: Unknown symbol release_firmware
bcm43xx: Unknown symbol request_firmware

Any ideas? Thanks!

Is the firmware_class module loaded?

Nope (unless lsmod would show it as something else). It apparently isn't compiled, so where would I find it in the kernel config? Thanks

It's CONFIG_FW_LOADER, "Generic driver options"->"Userspace firmware loading support".

Well, FW_LOADER is selected by something else. There is no CONFIG_FW_LOADER.

That make a difference?

Btw, I am on 2.6.16-rc3

Nevermind, it works now. (booting into wrong kernel.) Can anyone point me to a HOWTO to get wpa_supplicant working with this? Thanks!

it is really easy with wpa-supplicant :P

i load the following modules at startup: ieee80211_crypt_tkip, bcm43xx

with following commands i start my wlan:

ifconfig eth1 up
wpa_supplicant -B -Dwext -ieth1 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
dhcpcd eth1

this is my wpa_supplicant.conf:
network={
ssid="netgame"
scan_ssid=1
key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
psk="blablabla"
}

Ah, that worked! Yay! It runs slower than wired...which is kinda weird... but meh. Maybe I will try a static ip address.

Thanks!

Im trying to get an airport extreme card working on a titanium G4, but
it keeps crashing whenever I try to use it with "ifconfig up". And
when I say crash, I mean it crashes the kernel back to the debugger and cant recover.

Ive tried the portage bcm43xx driver, your bcm43xx driver, a full
kernel patch for 2.6.16 (which puts the driver into the kernel
compile). Each of them crashes the kernel.

Now it seems that other people get their machines going with the
Extreme card, so it _must_ be something that Im doing, but the
trouble is that ive tried a few different kernels and Im still getting
it, so it must be something that Im doing in each kernel compile.
*sigh* Or maybe something broken in the packages Ive installed.

It happens 100% of the time on the ifconfig ethX up.

Im getting desperate but I cant see anything that Im doing
incorrectly, so... if you have any suggestions, Id love to hear them.

confusedly,
cam

--------- fresh 2.6.16-r3 ------------

Using a plain 2.6.12-r3 (~ppc gentoo-sources), and then emerging your
bcm43xx module I get the same behaviour as below (with the 2.6.16
+ kernel patch). Obviously the hex addresses are different, but the
trace back is the same place.

This was using bcm43xx-0.0.1-r20060412

--------- 2.6.16 + specific bcm patch ------------

Using 2.6.16 kernel patched with bcm43xx patch from:

it boots and loads the driver.... lsmod:

I broke it now (was trying different settings to see if it would be faster). It gets hung up on dhcpcd. Everything else runs fine. Dhcpcd just never finishes... if a static ip is probably the solution, where is a good howto on setting that up? I haven't succeeded in finding one. Thanks!

EDIT: Forgot - I have reemerged bcm43xx and ieee80211softmac (and maybe dhcpcd, don't remember) trying to fix this. I am not sure if the fact that I am using WPA is causing a problem, I will try to find out.
