This isn't a support-request as such, so feel free to move this thread to somewhere else. Rather, I'm seeking for info and opinions.

I have a Mac Mini (1.25Ghz + 160GB external FW-HD)) with OS X (Panther), and I have a tower-PC that dualboots between W2K and Linux. I use the Mac quite rarely these days, mostly I use it to manage my iPod Mini and handle digital photos in iPhoto. I know that iPod works with Linux, and just yesterday I noticed that my digital camera works beautifully with Digikam. So my only reasons to use the OS X more or less vanished. However, I adore the Mini as far as hardware is concerned, so I would like to keep on using it, but with Linux this time.

Now, what would be the downsides of using Linux on the Mini? I'm mostly worried about support for Flash and certain media-codecs. How serious problems would those be in the end? How about actual usage? What works and what doesn't? My Mini doesn't have WLAN, so support (or lack of it) for it is not an issue. I never really shut down the Mini, rather it sleeps when not being used, and when I need it, it's up & running instantly. Does that work with Linux?

Is it worth the hassle, or should I just sell the Mini (hey, I could always use the extra money!)?

Huh? You talking about stuff that only Mac OS supports (but you have no reason to use anyway)? Not that I have any problems with Flash and media-codecs under Linux, mind... or is this part of special Mac hardware I don't know about?

What I meant is that I used Mini for some certain tasks mostly. And now I noticed that I could do those tasks in Linux as well, so I could install Linux on the Mini, and start using it instead. But if I do that, I might run in to problems that I do not currently have in Linux, since my current Linux-installation is a normal x86-Linux. If I installed Linux on the Mini, it would become my main machine, since I would much rather use the nice and quiet Mini, instead the big and noisy tower.

The codecs and Flash aren't really a problem in x86-Linux. But is there a WORKING flash-client for PPC-Linux? Media-codecs (usually win32-codecs in this case) work on x86-Linux, but how about PPC?

Flash support is very limited on ppc (supporting only some older versions) and a number of media codecs contain x86 specific instructions and thus won't work on ppc.

This FAQ question describes the current state of Flash on ppc. (spoiler: it's not good)

Hmmm, I think that the need for having working Flash could be resolved by having OS X in MOL as an extreme last resort? But what about sleeping/suspending/resuming with Linux?
