I can boot off the install cd with no problem until it stops on some loading of 1394 (firewire). I hit ctr F10 i think, and it says something about no drivers available.
Any suggestions?

Newest Gentoo install cd
B/W G3 upgraded to 600g4
768 ram
USB 2.0 PCI Card
Radeon 64mb 7000

*here is the error i get:
ieee 1394: agent[5237] ...... no drivers for IEEE1394 product 0x/0x/0x

this is just about a minute into booting the installation cd. and nothing plugged into the firewire ports

I suspect you've not got a response as no other user (that's read your post) has a solution for your unusual hardware set up. Otherwise, I'm sure you'd have a got reply. The 2006.0 InstallCD has problems on this machine. Booting problems can be overcome by entering ppc32 nodect at the boot: prompt and loading your driver modules manually once booted. There's some info on this in https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-442693.html. You might have more luck with an earlier InstallCD. Does Ubuntu boot OK on this machine?

Actually for about 3 weeks, ubuntu install wouldn't boot, then it started booting but froze when it should have went to the login screen. Then after a few boots, it worked and still continues to work. I know this machine has issues with linux distros. I actually did figure out the nodetect install. But i was confused when trying to manually install and copy packages. So I stopped. I read a tutorial and still was confused.. ehh, thats why I said I should probably stick with ubuntu. I do consider myself capapble of learning easily, but I seemed to fail with gentoo.. lol
