im installing gentoo Universal CD ppc on a powerbook g4 dual boot with OX 10.4 im on chapter (5 Installing the gentoo installation Files) Code Listing 14: Copy over source code
I entered---> # mkdir /mnt/gentoo/usr/portage/distfiles
Here is error message---> # mkdir: cannot create directory '/mnt/gentoo/usr/portage/distfiles :no such files or directory


My Partion is
/dev/hda9 apple_bootstap 800k
/dev/hda10 swap 2gb
/dev/hda11 root 30gb

Well if you booted with the InstallCD you are root.

You must have missed a proceeding step. Are you sure you did the following?

# tar xvjf /mnt/cdrom/snapshots/portage-<date>.tar.bz2 -C /mnt/gentoo/usr
where <date> is a date! If you're using 2006.0, <date> is 20060123. Tip: Read up on tab completion http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tab_completion. It'll make the install a lot less hassle.
If you run...
Code:
# ls /mnt/gentoo/usr

you'll see whether the parent directory has been created.

it looks like the parent directory was not created when i
entered ---> # ls /mnt/gentoo/usr
eror message was # no such file or directory
How do i fix the error ?

I can't help wondering why you want to install Gentoo on your machine. If you want to install Linux, Ubuntu is a PPC option that's well worth a look. If you really want to install Gentoo you need to be comfortable with a Unix/Linux command line interface (CLI). Take a look at this concise and well written article http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/articles/lpi-101-fundamentals-p1.xml.
