Hi Everyone!

I have finally got X and KDE on my Gentoo platform. The only issue that I am having know is that KDE is not recognizing my root password. I can login via the console with no problem, but when I'm in the KDE I get permission denied. Has anyone come across this issue? I'm using 2006.0 version.

Thanks ahead of time for the help.

cre8nkos,
This is by design. Accepted procedure on *nix systems is to log on as a user then su when you need to be root. It's called sandboxing and it is good. If you *have to* log on to KDE as root and are using kdm, you can change the AllowRootLogin option in /usr/kde/<version>/share/config/kdm/kdmrc file.

hope this helps,
Charlie

I understand that. I'm logging in with my user. When I'm logged in I go to the console and type "su" and then my password. I'm getting permission denied. I know I have the right root password because I'm able to log into the console directly with root rights and then "startx". For some odd reason KDE is not recognizing this. Sorry for the bad description.

Also I've tried accessing user accouts. I'm asked for the root password and it gives me the same message.

Any help would be great. I'm just trying to get root access on the console/shell within kde to run emerge.

Thanks.

Your user needs to be a member of the 'wheel' group to use su.

Moved from Gentoo Chat to Duplicate Threads in favour of this FAQ: Why can't I su to root?
