1st Gentoo install. I've got Gentoo, X and Gnome installed and running, but am having some difficulty figuring out how to properly configure ALSA. The box is an Apple G4 500 AGP. So I thought I'd ask if there is someone who has configured ALSA on a G4 (or any PowerMac, or might know what I've likely done wrong and can point me in the right direction).

Here is a snippet from dmesg that seems relevant:
Code:

...
i2c /dev entries driver
Found KeyWest i2c on "uni-n", 2 channels, stepping: 4 bits
Found KeyWest i2c on "mac-io", 1 channel, stepping: 4 bits
dmasound_pmac: Awacs/Screamer Codec Mfct: 1 Rev 3
input: dmasound beeper as /class/input/input2
PowerMac Screamer  DMA sound driver rev 016 installed
Core driver edition 01.06 : PowerMac Built-in Sound driver edition 00.07
Write will use    4 fragments of   32768 bytes as default
Read  will use    4 fragments of   32768 bytes as default
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.10rc3 (Mon Nov 07 13:30:21 2005 UTC).
pmac: can't request resource 0!
ALSA device list:
No soundcards found.
...

When I run alsaconfig, it starts saying it can't find module snd, then after it runs it says it was not able to find a soundcard.

I configured the kernel with the options suggested for a PowerMac in the Handbook (ppc), and I elected to build-in most items. I'm wondering if I should have left some of these as modules, or if I even picked the right ones.

Moved from Installing Gentoo to Gentoo on PPC.

Read the sound/alsa section of the Gentoo PPC FAQ

Even with ALSA configured properly there is distortion. If you have external speakers the outcome is somewhat better.

when you have als the sound-related stuff built into the kernel, alsaconf cant find anything ... (because its already there).
The sound-stuff has to be compiled as module ...

Okay, I'll move them back out to be modules. It hints at that in the ppc FAQ, but it shows the kernel menuconfig choices being made to compile them in as static, so that's what I did.
