Hi,
I've had my iBook power-down several times during the past weeks.
So I tried to look where the problem lies, but I haven't come up with much answers, except to that pbbuttonsd has a lot to do with it.

This is the case:
I boot my iBook, I don't load bcm43xx, bluetooth and don't start gdm/X.
I have pbbuttons set up to turn of the backlight when I close the laptop.
I run the folowing oneliner:
while true; do date>>log; sync; sleep 10; done
And close the laptop. Then I wait. When the hddled stops flashing every 10 seconds, I open the laptop.
The laptop seems to have died completely. ctrl-alt-fn is not responsive, screen stays black, in other words: the laptop powered-down.
A quick press on the power button and the apple chime rings and yaboot comes up again.

The log teaches me the computer stopped working after 4 minutes.
I was able to replicate this behaviour 4 times in a row (so I guess this is always replicatable).

Weird.

The exact thing happens when I close the laptop in X, with programs running and all.

If I just turn the contrast down and the backlight goes off, the laptop stays alive.

I have never experienced sudden powerdown or battery problems with this iBook.
I did these tests at +- 70% capacity.

I put my pbbuttonsd.conf online at: http://users.skynet.be/langewouters/shared/pbbuttonsd.conf

Does anyone have advice, or can replicate this problem.

Does pbbuttonsd mess with the penguin's head?

tia,

The PMU on modern Apple laptops will turn off the machine if it's still running with the lid closed after 4 minutes, supposedly it's a safety measure or possibly heat related. A few other people have reported similar issues here before. Basically, as far as I know, at this time, it's unknown what Apple does to the PMU to prevent it from turning off the machine with the lid closed.
