I just installed gentoo on my system using stage3 from the 2006.0 livecd with ~x86 packages. There are a series of sound modules that will not load but my main issue is updating portage. emerge -p portage yields a long string of packages blocked by xorg-6.9. Is there a way to safely upgrade to 7.0 or down to 6.8? (Also, can I prevent those pesky sound modules from trying to load during startup?)

Have you tried the Modular X HOWTO?
http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/desktop/x/x11/modular-x-howto.xml

Re sound: set up aliases in /etc/modules.d/alsa. See http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/alsa-guide.xml

Are there any known issues as far as conflicts with other packages after migrating to Modular X?

Practically everything in the tree is ported to modular X, so there shouldn't be too many issues. Modular X looks almost identical to previous X versions as far as compiling X apps goes, so there shouldn't be any more issues than upgrading previous versions of X. The Modular X HOWTO should list most known issues. Also see the Modular X thread here.

As a matter of fact, I seem to have a similar problem. I've been searching the forums for a couple of hours without having it mentionned... (but maybe I just suck at searching forums  )

So if I understand well, cessman4life up there launches emerge -p portage and it suddenly outputs a nice list of blocked packages related to xorg 6.9.

As I said I've been having a similar problem, it all started yesterday after I did nothing in particular.
Basically I'm on a computer with Gentoo that I mostly use as a storage server, but due to stuff happening to my laptop (blah blah about boring details here), i'm using it as a desktop for now. So I decided to upgrade Thunderbird from 1.0.6 to 1.5.0-r1.

But Portage didn't seem to agree.

[simulating it again so as to paste what it says :]

Code:
Morgane ~ # ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge -auv =mozilla-thunderbird-1.5-r1

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!

OK, now I'm far from being a Gentoo expert but i've been using it for quite a while, and this doesn't sound normal. I mean I don't see why Thunderbird would want to upgrade to X11R7 (from what I understand of it), but it definitely wants to and hence is blocked by xorg-6.9.

By the way, I'm using 6.8.2 at present.

As I don't really intend to move on to modular X for now, this is rather annoying. Especially because it also does this if I try to upgrade to xchat-2.6.2 (from 2.6.0. I tried this to see if it was doing it again !) or gnome-2.14.

Also note that for some reason it wants to download gentoo-sources-2.16.6...

It rather looks like it thinks I asked for an emerge -auv system or something...

After various tests, it seems to me that it only does that if I specify a version for the package and mark it with "=".

All I can tell is that I haven't played too much with the system lately so I'm unsure what can have caused this. I'm not sure when I did this, but I probably upgraded portage recently, and I synced portage yesterday evening.

emerge --info output :

You're specifying ACCEPT_KEYWORDS on the command line. That was deprecated years ago in favour of /etc/portage/package.keywords. Don't do it unless you know exactly what you're doing.

I migrated to Modular X with relative ease yesterday and while there is no visible difference, I do notice a few things:

1) Kaffeine is the only player that plays video and it is quite choppy

2) Mplayer and Totem do not play video even after I tried to use all the different video-output drivers

Are there any options other than reinstalling and emerging Modular X before installing desktop environments and other packages?

I just occasionnally use it because I sometimes find myself too lazy to add it to package.keywords just for one time anyway. (yeah I admit  )

Also, in case someone still follows - It's stopped causing the problem as suddenly as it started, so I really don't know what to say.

If you specify ACCEPT_KEYWORDS on the command line, you're temporarily switching your whole system over to ~arch keywords. That is almost always not what you want; you just want one package or a set of packages to use unstable keywords.

Moved from Desktop Environments to Duplicate Threads in favour of xorg-x11-6.9 -> xorg-x11-7.0-r1 everything blocked.
