/dev/ROOT:
The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2 file system. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2 filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:
e2fsck -b 8193 <device>

* Filesystem couldn't be fixed :( [!!!]

That is the exact error I get when trying to boot up my computer after following all the steps in the gentoo handbook (for x86) up to 10.d

Since I'm fairly new with linux I haven't the slightest clue what is going on. My best guess would be that I might have messed up the GRUB conf file. I say this because the GRUB naming system for HDs was confusing to me, in addition to the fact that I have 3 FAT32 partitions, one of which takes the slot of hde1, while my linux boot is hde2. My initial inclination is that GRUB would view this as HD(0,1).

But I could be way off. Let me know what you think, any suggestions you might have, or if I can provide anymore information that might be useful.

You probably haven't modified your fstab; where else could it find /dev/ROOT? ;)

Bye
