Hello,

I'm trying to upgrade the kernel on my iBook G4 1,33 GHz to 2.6.16. I built the kernel from vanilla-sources-2.6.16.1 with genkernel --oldconfig all. There comes a message, that you have to use the kernel parameter real_root. Ok, I did this and wrote this yaboot.conf:

Code:
boot=/dev/hda2
ofboot=hd:2
device=hd:
root=/dev/hda5
timeout=30
install=/usr/lib/yaboot/yaboot
magicboot=/usr/lib/yaboot/ofboot
read-only

image=/boot/kernel-genkernel-ppc-2.6.15
        partition=5
        label=2.6.15
        root=/dev/ram0
        append="root=/dev/hda5"

image=/boot/kernel-genkernel-ppc-2.6.15-swsusp2-rc16
        partition=5
        label=2.6.15-swsusp2-rc16
        root=/dev/ram0
        append="root=/dev/hda5"

image=/boot/kernel-genkernel-ppc-2.6.16.1
        partition=5
        label=2.6.16.1
        root=/dev/ram0
        append="real_root=/dev/hda5 init=/linuxrc"

macosx=hd:3
enablecdboot
enableofboot

But I always get:

Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(1,0)
<0>Rebooting in 180n seconds.._

I compared the kernel config but I can't find any suspicious difference to the 2.6.15 config. I also tried it with gentoo-sources and with a lot of different kernel append stings...

Any Ideas how to boot the 2.6.16 kernel?

cu, Magnum

try appending root=/dev/hda5 as well as real_root=/dev/hda5.
that is assuming you have vfs support in the kernel
