Hi all,
I add my grub problem to the yours:

So, I have 3 HD: hda (gentoo from stage3); hdb (data); sda (gentoo from stage1).
MB: MSI k8t800 neo2 with sata_via chipset
Athlon 64

It's ALL compiled in 64bit

What I want to do is only start gentoo from sda.

So, I'm able to start grub also from both hda and sda, but if I choose to start from hda it works, otherwise if I choose to start from sda it HANGS! I can see in the screen only 2 commands of 3 (the 3rd is the initrd):

root (hd2,0)
kernel /boot/vm64-2.6.16 root=/dev/sda2

I've also tryed to do the following from the grub terminal (the one that you can access by pressing the "c" key when the pc starts)

find /boot/grub/stage1

and it hangs again after showing me (hd0,0)

But if I try to do this from a livecd (ex. Conrad) it show me (hd0,0) and (hd2,0)

ANY IDEAS?

grub is compiled with "static" useflag

Thanks

Massimo

It sounds like there is something wrong with the BIOS.

You may need to configure SATA before PATA in the boot order*, then /dev/sda will be (hd0).

* I mean the boot order in your BIOS.
