It responded with the following

55) /etc/samba/smb.conf.example
/etc/samba/._cfg0000_smb.conf.example
56) /etc/init.d/sshd
/etc/init.d/._cfg0000_sshd
57) /etc/pam.d/sshd
/etc/pam.d/._cfg0000_sshd
58) /etc/ssh/sshd_config
/etc/ssh/._cfg0000_sshd_config
59) /etc/pam.d/system-auth
/etc/pam.d/._cfg0000_system-auth
60) /etc/udev/udev.conf
/etc/udev/._cfg0000_udev.conf
61) /etc/shorewall/zones
/etc/shorewall/._cfg0000_zones
Please select a file to edit by entering the corresponding number.
(don't use -3 or -5 if you're unsure what to do)
(-1 to exit) (-3 to auto merge all remaining files)
(-5 to auto-merge AND not use 'mv -i'): -1

What option do I choose - I have no idea.

Thanks,
Lee

See a howto on gentoo-wiki. I'm afraid you will have to enter numbers from 1 to 61 and review each update.

You should run etc-update (or dispatch-conf) when emerge tells you to do so... Generally after each emerge it's good to run 'etc-update', 'emerge --newuse --verbose --ask world' and 'revdep-rebuild'.

Thanks for the advice. I think I managed to mess something up, I can no longer login as root from outside KDE. Ie by ctrl+alt+F1 etc, root login does not work: I keep getting the message - incorrect login.

I can however do a 'su' from a terminal in KDE and everything works ok.

Any ideas?

Thanks
Lee

Did you do something bad with your /etc/pam.d/login file? See this topic, it may help you.

Here's my /etc/pam.d/login:
Code:

#%PAM-1.0

auth       required     pam_securetty.so
auth       include      system-auth
auth       required     pam_tally.so file=/var/log/faillog onerr=succeed no_magic_root
auth       required     pam_shells.so
auth       required     pam_nologin.so

account    required     pam_access.so
account    include      system-auth
account    required     pam_tally.so deny=0 file=/var/log/faillog onerr=succeed no_magic_root

password   include      system-auth

session    include      system-auth
session    required     pam_env.so
session    optional     pam_lastlog.so
session    optional     pam_motd.so motd=/etc/motd
session    optional     pam_mail.so

# If you want to enable pam_console, uncomment the following line
# and read carefully README.pam_console in /usr/share/doc/pam*
#session    optional    pam_console.so

Thanks, I am going to give that a try. I also seemed to have killed my serial connection.

I can a dhcpcd error when booting up. The /etc/conf.d/net file looks ok. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Lee
