My powerbook played sound perfect after I finished the install, it can play mp3 and video , but after I reboot 2-3 times, I cannot play sound anymore, and nothing shown in "alsamixer"(I mean is empty).Before I can use the mixer from xfce to adjust the sound.
my kernel is gentoo-sourses, and follow gentoo-alsa guide to configure kernel. After audio down, I try to emerge alsa-driver , but failed.
what should I do now ?
thanks.
stellit.

you should
Code:
dmesg
to find out just what's going on.

I think it's wierd though, the way it worked for a while and then just stopped working... have you consulted google? To do that i'd need the output of lspci probably, and maybe dmesg and lsmod.

have you looked into doing
Code:
/etc/init.d/alsasound restart

if that works, it's a simple question of getting it up at boot which i should be able to help you do

if not, we'd better look farther into it. show previous outputs too

I emerge alsa driver failed, so I find this thread https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-192097-highlight-alsa+asm.html
I have to say, after my first reboot, audio works perfect.
what should I do now ?

could be wrong, but i wonder: why don't you have a sound card driver in your output? Here's mine
Code:
 * Storing ALSA Mixer Levels ...                                          [ ok ]
 * Unloading ALSA ...                                                     [ ok ]

 * Loading ALSA modules ...
 * Could not detect custom ALSA settings.  Loading all detected alsa drivers.
 *   Loading: snd_intel8x0 ...                                            [ ok ]
 *   Loading: snd_intel8x0m ...                                           [ ok ]
 *   Loading: snd-seq-oss ...                                             [ ok ]
 *   Loading: snd-pcm-oss ...                                             [ ok ]
 * Restoring Mixer Levels ...                                             [ ok

You can see that along with the generic drivers you're loading, I load the intel drivers that support my crappy intel sound card.

so we'd better see the output of lspci and try to track down what should be loaded. Then you will likely have to rebuild the alsa-driver

did you edit your make.conf with an ALSA_CARDS setting like in the Alsa Gentoo Guide?
