i am trying to use an external monitor with my ibook g3 600mgz via a mini-vga to vga connection that is standard for white ibooks of this particular model. the port and cord work fine in mac os so the hardware is fine.

the problem is that for ubuntu and for ydl i cant use my external monitor with x (works in cl but who is satisfied with just that?). the problem is that i start up normaly with my old linux partition or with a live cd and the system eventually will try to load x but will be unable to. the weird thing is that i will still get the cl login and be able to use the cl. i dont know why i cant use x on my external monitor when i can use the cl.

i was about to try it out with gentoo but i wanted to check here first because idont want to go through the lengthy installation to find that i have gotten nowhere. anyone know what i should do? i am thinking that all that should really be needed is a specially scripted xorg.conf file.

would really appreciate the help a whole lot. thanks soooo much in advanced.

That's interesting. On my iBook G4 1,33GHz (mid 2005) it works fine with X, but it stays black on console. Did you do anything special to make this work?

Yes, and there are some working config files in the web. I thing the chances to get it work are good. However things in gentoo will not be much different from what is in ydl and ubuntu.

I've succeeded in displaying dual monitor on my ibook (G3-500) with a mirror mode.
But the quality of screen is very sluggish.
Actually, I can always look at the wave of the screen, which makes it impossible to present slide with openoffice.
Is it the problem of ati driver on xorg orthe problem of kernel?

Hi,

I've the same issue with my ibook G3 500. My external screen is fuzzy.

I use the option "display 'Mirror'" in the device section of my xorg.conf. I tried to set it to 'VGA' to see if it works fine with only the external monitor, but it also fuzzy.

Is anybody fixed this ?
