Hi all,

I want to start a dialogue regarding the messages embedded in ebuilds that show as part of the output from emerge.

I was merging OpenLDAP and saw the following message:

* If you are upgrading from OpenLDAP-2.1, and run slapd on this
* machine please see the ebuild for upgrade instructions, otherwise
* you may corrupt your database!

* Part of the configuration file syntax has changed:
* 'access to attribute=' is now 'access to attrs='

* You must also run revdep-rebuild after upgrading from 2.1 to 2.2:
* # revdep-rebuild --library liblber.so.2
* # revdep-rebuild --library libldap.so.2
* # revdep-rebuild --library libldap_r.so.2

now, imagine this WAS an upgrade (it wasn't, but...) and I hadn't felt like watching compiler output for hours (go figure). I would go on my merry way to corrupting my LDAP database. This message, and others like it, seem much too important to throw in as an "oh by the way" comment before the ./configure -- no one (ok, almost) is going to sit and watch everything compile. There needs to be a way to put these messages in a log and inform you of it. If it is being logged, there's certaiinly no message after emerge completes that informs you of it.

Thoughts?

Hi zBrain,

welcome to the forums :-)

This is an often asked question, and there are different solutions for it like waiting for the next Portage version which includes support for it or using one of the tools that do it for you. See Log of emerge readable output produced somewhere?

Moved from Portage & Programming to Duplicates.
