I've noticed - on all my gentoo boxes - that when you 'emerge sync', Updating Portage cache seems to take about 10x as long to get from 50% to 100% as it takes to get from 0% to 50%. Anyone know why - or even what it's doing?

It's a raw database, therefore slow.

If you wish to speed it up, try this trick -> https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-261580-highlight-.html

ben-xo,

Its processing the KDE split ebuilds at that point. The testing portage is much faster and it works for me.
Non KDE users can exclude KDE from their portage tree to save space and time. Read # RSYNC_EXCLUDEFROM in /etc/make.conf.example.

I thought the KDE ebuilds were only split recently? This slowdown has been there for a while.

Moved from Portage & Programming to Duplicate Threads.

See Emerge sync takes forever, uses 98% CPU
