A few days ago, in a backup mishap, I nuked my /var directory. Is there some way to recover my Gentoo system or am I screwed up and I should reinstall from scratch?

I suppose I should reinstall from scratch because all the dependency info for packages is somewhere in /var/lib/portage, right?

I probably can put my hands on /var/lib/portage/world from another installation which is quite similar to mine, Is this going to help me somehow?

Please help me if you can.

More or less; not only /var/lib/portage, but /var/db is where all informations on the packages you emerged is stored; there's no way I know to recover a broken /var apart from reemerging all of your old world, but if you change even only a package from your previous installation you'll leave a lot of trash in your machine (I mean, files you had, which you'll never update nor remove since your system doesn't know they are there).

Yeah; just emerge -e system and then emerge all of those; but as I wrote before, if you want a clean system just format and reinstall from scratch.

Bye
