i have an iBook with pmac_zilog internal modem .. and .. modem is working and dialing without any problems .. but ..
somehow .. i can`t connect via dialup to internet .. :(

i am using wvdial with this conf

Code:

cat /etc/wvdial.conf
[Dialer Defaults]

Init1 = ATX3
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
Modem Type = Analog Modem
Phone = 042120120
ISDN = 0
Username = *****
Password = *****
Modem = /dev/ttyS0
Baud = 230400

now .. as far as i have figured out .. it is not wvdial`s fault .. but pppd`s ..

the thing that i don`t understand is what conf files in /etc/ppp/ am I using during connection .. ????

i have /etc/ppp/options

Code:

# /etc/ppp/options
#

#connect
#noauth

# Prevent pppd from forking into the background
-detach
#
# use the modem control lines
modem
# use uucp style locks to ensure exclusive access to the serial device
lock
# use hardware flow control
crtscts
# create a default route for this connection in the routing table
defaultroute
# do NOT set up any "escaped" control sequences
asyncmap 0
debug

one more thing that i know is that I have to use PAP and CHAP .. so i have configured those config files too

Code:

matrix playahater # cat /etc/ppp/chap-secrets
"user***" * "passs*****"
user***     *       passs*****
matrix playahater #

Code:

matrix playahater # cat /etc/ppp/pap-secrets
"user***" PTT "passs*****"
user***     *       passs*****
matrix playahater #

bottom line .. this is what I get

Code:

.....
CONNECT 230400

man pppd
Code:

       10     The PPP negotiation failed, that is, it didn't reach the point where at least one net-
              work protocol (e.g. IP) was running.

what am i doing wrong ??
in other words .. are above config files OK .. am I using the right ones ??
i saw that i can use also "/etc/init.d/net.ppp0" .. :roll:

Is there a way for someone to explain this to me in one sentence .. what files do i need to configure in order to use dialup ??

10x in advance

Cheers

from what I see, your "provider" doesn't support PPP.
just connect through a terminal like minicom and run whatever commands they support (and you need).

well .. i think that`s not the problem .. cuz .. before gentoo, i have installed ubuntu on this mac and i could connect using wvdial without any problems ..
at first i though that this was the permissions problem somehow pppd can`t be started .. even though i was doing that as root .. but i have doublechecked and that section is working just fine :) ..

Then you should try activate "Stupid Mode" in wvdial.conf. Probably your provider start PPP negociation only when receives a PPP frame from you.
