I have yet to hear the fan in this powerbook; in gentoo or osx. I've turned on everything I can find in the kernel for hardware sensors / thermal management (except the winboard stuff. figured I wouln't need those.) lm_sensors compiles fine but xsensors / xfce4-sensors can't find any sensors. /proc/cpuinfo does give the temperature which is usualy ~42 C and seems to level out at 67 C siting on the bed compiling. I searched and everything I can find is either for much newer macs or 3 years old and unsolved. there has to be someone using one of these.what's the deal? does hardware turn the fan on at a set high temp or am I running with no fan?is there a way to turn it on manualy in gentoo? I know these things get hot. is this typical or should I bust out the soldering iron and run some wires from the usb port to switch then to the fan? I don't mind the heat I just don't want to wake up one day and find that it melted doing an emerge.

As I understand the issue, the fan in the Lombard rarely comes on due to the case design. The bottom of the case is a heat spreader and there is litte enough space to circulate air. Should you have the laptop on top of your bed, the fan turning on would simply increase the chance of overheating. In addition, there are reports of the fan controller not working.

I would say check to see if the fan controller is working and otherwise just keep an eye on the temperature for a while.

I came on when I was playing sega (generator-gtk reniced to -20) I think about 70 C. So I guess the fan works but as I usualy don't get that hot I won't hear it to often. it does have a big heat sink with a heat pipe in it. I guess I was just freeking out 'cause 60 C will cause a thermal shutdown on my P4 desktop, but I gess thats a normal temp for a G3. I'm still unable to get any of the sensors programs to work but I'ts not a big deal as I worte a script that greps it from /proc/cpuinfo and puts it and my battery level from /proc/apm in a transparent borderless Eterm on my desktop.
