I have a ibook 1.2 and I want to use my aiport under gentoo.
I use a 2.6.16-gentoo-r3 kernel.

I just follow this page http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-ppc-faq.xml#doc_chap2 and did
Code:
# emerge bcm43xx

now, iwconfig give me

Code:
eth0      IEEE 802.11b/g  ESSID:off/any  Nickname:"Broadcom 4306"
          Mode:Managed  Access Point: Invalid   Bit Rate:1 Mb/s
          RTS thr:off   Fragment thr:off
          Encryption key:off
          Link Quality:0  Signal level:0  Noise level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0  Rx invalid crypt:0  Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0  Invalid misc:0   Missed beacon:0

nice but

ifconfig eth0 up answer

Code:
SIOCSIFFLAGS: No such file or directory

You need to install the bcm43xx firmware for that to work. Emerge bcm43xx-fwcutter and get a driver file (see the fwcutter README). The directions for this are in the thread at the top of this forum and at the end of the ebuild when you install fwcutter.

Check with lspci, but that should also have a bcm43xx card. Apple uses only two types of wireless cards, Orinoco (Airport 1) and Broadcom (Airport 2). See the faq for more details.

ok

for me lscpi give:
Code:

I read the readme file and the post but I don't understand everything.

I need to install a firmware but wich one ?

I find a file in my /System/Library/Extensions/AppleAirPort2.kext/Contents/MacOS/AppleAirPort2 and put it in /lib/firmware. I did
Code:
 # bcm43xx-fwcutter -w /lib/firmware AppleAirPort2
Cannot open input file AppleAirPort2

dmesg tail give me:

This is indeed a bcm43xx card. For the firmware, you should find the file wl_apsta.o and use that instead of AppleAirport2, the result is a little more reliable. But either way, the command you gave would work if the AppleAirport2 file was in the same directory that you were running bcm43xx-fwcutter in. You do not need to leave AppleAirPort2 in /lib/firmware, you need to run bcm43xx-fwcutter to cut the firmware from that file and put the resulting files in /lib/firmware. There is a tutorial at the top of this forum.

You need to associate to an AP first. Please read the topic at the top of this forum.

I read it (Native Airport Extreme Drivers)

But I don't understand about what you're thinking when you say that I "need to associate to an AP first"

If it's to do iwcinfig eth 0 channel XX and so on, I did it.

i'm wrong ?

As is says in the first post in that topic:
Quote:

You must bring the device up with ifconfig before doing any other configuration steps.
Replace the red items with your specific settings
Quote:
ifconfig eth# up
iwlist eth# scan
iwconfig eth# channel #
iwconfig eth# rate #M
iwconfig eth# enc XXXX-XXXX-XX (Optional, for WEP)
iwconfig eth# essid "AP_ESSID"
