Unless the status has changed recently, PREEMPT is still considered unstable on ppc.

It may not fix your graphics artifacts but will help isolate the problem.

If you haven't already, get the most recent Mesa and R300 driver from freedesktop.org.

And try adjusting various settings in Quake itself - texture detail, colour depth, that sort of thing.

Full preempt can still cause issues while under heavy load. The partial preempt available in recent kernel releases should work fine.

R300 is still really a new driver, there are lots of bugfixes in the upcoming 7.1 release, maybe that will fix it. That said, it could also be a problem with Quake3, I haven't tried it yet with r300.
