Hello. Been trying to get dri to work on my old iMac G3 233mhz. It has a ATI Technologies Inc 3D Rage Pro 215GP (rev 5c) graphics card with 6MB VRAM. My Xorg is compiled with dri support, see below...
Code:
salus ~ # ldd /usr/bin/glxgears
        libGL.so.1 => //usr//lib/opengl/xorg-x11/lib/libGL.so.1 (0x0ff2d000)
        libXext.so.6 => /usr/lib/libXext.so.6 (0x0fef7000)
        libX11.so.6 => /usr/lib/libX11.so.6 (0x0fdec000)
        libpthread.so.0 => /lib/tls/libpthread.so.0 (0x0fdb8000)
        libm.so.6 => /lib/tls/libm.so.6 (0x0fd23000)
        libc.so.6 => /lib/tls/libc.so.6 (0x0fbd3000)
        libXxf86vm.so.1 => /usr/lib/libXxf86vm.so.1 (0x0fbac000)
        libdl.so.2 => /lib/libdl.so.2 (0x0fb88000)
        /lib/ld.so.1 (0x30000000)

And my kernel has DRI support on, though my graphics card is not mentioned in the submeny to this, so I didn't enable anyone there.

My xorg.conf states this on the problem
Code:
...
Section "Module"
        Load    "extmod"
        Load    "dri"
#       Load    "dbe"
        Load    "record"
        Load    "glx"
        Load    "type1"
        Load    "freetype"
        Load    "fbdevhw"
        Load    "GLcore"
EndSection
...
Section "Device"
        Identifier      "Card0"
        ### Available Driver options are:
        #Option "SWcursor"
        Option  "HWcursor"
        #Option "PciRetry"
        #Option "NoAccel"
        #Option "ShadowFB"      "true"
        Driver  "ati"
        BusID   "PCI:0:18:0"
        Option  "UseFBDev"      "true"
        Option  "fbdev" "/dev/fb0"
        VideoRam    6144
EndSection
...
Section "DRI"
        Mode 0666
EndSection

Been trying many screen resolutions, and glxinfo tells my that it isn't enabled, even in 640x480@8bit or in 1024x768@24

I read somewhere that you need 8MB+ to get DRI to work, and other places that it worked on this iMac which only has 6MB, so I don't know what to believe. I need DRI to play gltron and other funny games :)

Can you please paste in your X.org log? It's in /var/log/. I don't think it's possible with xorg-x11, but it might have been possible with older xfree86 releases.

Installed drm.ko and mach64.ko (kernel modules) from cvs (from http://dri.freedesktop.org/) and then I recompiled X with " "insecure-drivers" as useflag. Then it all worked ! Sorta :/ Even though glxinfo says I have dri and glxgears works, no games works. Then only game I can start is gltron, and it looks like this (alot of wierd colors and unstable).

http://homepage.mac.com/simen/gltron-0.70-1.png

Tried with older cvs, and it produces this or crash my X server and sometimes even the whole machine ! Tried to reinstall libsdl to... What to do now ?

:/ Linux sucks on graphics. Except from that is rules :)

As said, glxgears works... Strange that gltron doesn't or the other games I've tried like "race" and "glaxium"

Bah, I forgot those were Mach64 cards! :)

You should try using modular X, the mach64 driver should be a whole lot more usable with that version.

See http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/desktop/x/x11/modular-x-howto.xml for upgrade instructions.

Good luck!

How will this help ? It doesn't include any kernel modules, and I already have support for "ati" in X, and I've added "insecure-drivers" to x11-xorg's USE variable.

I already have "/usr/lib/modules/dri/mach64_dri.so" and this is the X module I need right ?

I'm trying now with modular X

Yep, sorry. I thought they had included the Mach64 driver with the last DRI/DRM release, but I was wrong, sorry. Which cvs branch are you building from for the DRI/DRM module?

I've tried many versions from CVS. I had one the 2nd. of Mai, and I had about every month from june 2005 and until now. Same result or crash of X or machine. Someone compiled, but with alot of warning about some thing "pciprettyname" or something like that. That stopped in <=2006.

Modular X finally up and running. Needed to recompile libXaw and xterm then I tried gltron. STILL THE SAME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :x

glxgears still works the way it should

Also tried mplayer with OpenGL, that displays the movie with the same weird colors that gltron do !!!

Edit: recompiled libsdl and gltron, no difference !!

The last time mach64_drv.c was updated was 11/11/2005. Would it maybe help if I got a kernel from that time ? Since that the drm module from 11/11/2005 crashes X, but when drm is from a never release it is ok, but shows strange colors ?

With the newest cvs version I get this error; and on most of the others as well, but this version works, but with strange colors and unstable.

/root/dri/drm/linux-core/mach64_state.c: In function `mach64_do_get_frames_queued':
/root/dri/drm/linux-core/mach64_state.c:455: warning: comparison of distinct pointer types lacks a cast

Have though... Do I need a new version of "libdrm", the one that follows with drm cvs.
