I guess this is a duplicate thread, but I can't find any thread that deals with the matter. The forums search filter ruins my life =(

I'm running xorg-6.8.2-r6 on my 800MHz iBook, and I've been doing it for quite a while. But the monitor never shuts down. It only blanks, but the lamp is still on. Messing around with "xset dmps force off" and similar also only blanks the screen, but keeps the lamp on.
If I want to shut down the monitor I use to lower the brightness untill the monitor shuts down, but this is just a bad workaround.

There should be a better way of doing this, right?

Do you use pbbuttonsd? I believe you can use that for what you want. It has the option "DimFullyDark" for powering off the backlight after some time.
Note that it's better for the backlight not to shut it down and bring it back up frequently. I just do that manually in the way you described, since I only need it when I leave the laptop on all night long.

You'll also need to make sure that you have the correct framebuffer driver, using the wrong one (ofonly instead of radeon for instance) can prevent the LCD from turning off.

Thanks! That helped, but it seems that the LCD-lamp doesn't light up when I press a key or move the mouse cursor. Although I can almost see the picture being displayed. At least whats in the middle of the screen (behind the apple on the top of the lid). So that means that the LCD is active, but not the lamp. Is there a way to deal with this?
