Hi,

After my recent post about What type of external disk do you recomend? for running Gentoo in an external HD without touching its internal one, I've finally bought a portable Firewire disk for my Powerbook G4.

After verifying that its working properly under MacOSX and also OpenFirmware recognizes it, then I booted from the 2006.0 LiveCD ("install-ppc-universal-2006.0.iso") to try the install of Gentoo on the Firewire disk. Unfortunately I've been unable to, as the Firewire disk is not activated (/dev/sda* never gets available). I've studied lots of topics on the forum and my final conclusion is that something is wrong with the ohci1394 (or ieee1394, sbp2) with this version of the Gentoo LiveCD.

To do more testing I downloaded the Yellow Dog Linux (YDL) Install CD's and booted with the first one, which recognized and activated my Firewire disk and performed a simple install (running: 'install firewire' and following a GUI) which setup YDL in the Firewire in less than 20 minutes, being able to boot from it without any problem later on, and without touching my main HD.

However, I still want to install Gentoo :-), so I wonder if it's possible to use a different LiveCD (YDL) to perform the initial steps and then continue somehow with the Gentoo LiveCD ...

If so, could you please help me or point me to a topic or document about it.

Thank you very much in advance,

Luis

Looks like I'm not alone, and this is happening to more people see here.

Now I just need to find out how to use a different LiveCD to complete the install.

Objetive: Install Gentoo in my new Firewire Disk (portable).

Problems:
- Gentoo Live CD 266.0 ppc ("install-ppc-universal-2006.0.iso") does NOT recognizes the external disk.
- Boot from Yellow Dog Linux works and recognizes the disk, but can't jump into the shell to install Gentoo.
- Ubuntu latest LiveCD recognizes the disk but has a problem trying to mount the CDROM (invalid argument).

So, I'm desperate, I've tried several options without success.

Anybody know of a PPC LiveCD (any version) that allows me to boot, then recognizes the FireWire disk, the CD and gives me a shell where I can unmount it and mount the Gentoo LiveCD to continue the installation?

Thanks a lot in advance,

Luis

I used 2005.1 to create the 2006.0 GRP Packages, so I know that worked fine with my FW drive on an iBook G3. You can use 2005.1 to install 2006.0 by booting with 2005.1 and using the 2006.0 stages. Can you give more details on what went wrong with the firewire drivers? dmesg?

Thanks a lot JoseJX for your reply.

*) Where can I download 2005.1 from? I cannot find it. (Looked at several mirrors but only found 2006)

*) Regarding the details:

I'm having the same problems described here: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-441680-highlight-livecd.html

In summary:
- bootup succeeded and gives me a shell
- firewire HD is not recognized at all.
- Initially only ohci1394 and ieee1394 are loaded.
- sbp2 and sd_mod aren't loaded but loading manually doesn't help
- Once loaded (the previous four) they can't be unloaded.
- scsi_mod can't be loaded (not found) but it's under /lib/modules/...
- dmesg has several "IN from bad port xxx at (hex)" messages
- keymap doesn't work, it just reverts to the default US layout

[EDITED]

Here is the detail, starting from boot, after boot and at the end loading modules:

Boot, all ok till the shell. Keymap doesn't work due to /dev/vc/0 not found.

Code:
boot: ppc32 dofirewire

Output of dmesg after boot:

Code:

Hi, sorry to bother again, I've included the details above in case it's useful for the developers.

Where can I download 2005.1 from?

Thanks again

You can get the 2005.1 CD here (or on any mirror with a historical directory) : http://gentoo.osuosl.org/releases/historical/ppc/2005.1/installcd/

I'll take a look at the logs and see if I can figure out what's going wrong.

Hi,

I've been finally able to perform the installation, and as promised here is the report which maybe is useful for someone else.

-Date: 2006-May
-Objective: Install Gentoo Linux (PPC) on an external firewire Disk and make it bootable. This allows me to run Linux on my PowerBook G4 untouching the internal HD (MacOSX).
-Hardware: PowerBook G4 (17" 1.67 GHz, 1GB RAM) boot ROM (4.9.1f3)
-External Disk: SmartDisk FireLite portable Firewire HD (40GB) without power supply, powered
by the firewire cable.

References:
- https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-162622-highlight-firewire+yaboot.html
- http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-ppc.xml

I've followed the Gentoo official reference to perform the installation. In this howto I'm just adding my selected options and differences, as it maybe are usefull for your case.

Install medias I've used:
- Booting: install-ppc-minimal-2005.1.iso
- Install: install-ppc-universal-2006.0.iso

I've used the install-ppc-minimal-2005.1.iso to boot and start the install, instead of the 2006.0 due to a problem with the latest not recognizing the Firewire HD.

Prework - Find the OpenFirmware path to my FireWire HardDisk
Code:

With the powerbook off,
connect the firewire disk and power it up.
Hold down the <option>-<cmd>-O-F keys once bell sounds and keep them pressed till indicated.

This brings up the OF prompt. Then type:

dev /
 ls

Look for something like:

> /pci@f4000000
   /firewire@e
     /node@00d0010d0000e4d3
       /sbp-2@4008
         /disk@0

> devalias
 fw            /pci@f4000000/firewire

My OF Path is: /pci@f4000000/firewire@e/node@00d0010d0000e4d3/sbp-2@4008/disk@0
or: fw@e/node@00d0010d0000e4d3/sbp-2@4008/disk@0

Following the same chapter numbering and instructions found in the handbook, I'm addind my additional notes and options I selected. If somthing is missing is because I followed the manual or maybe I didn't need it.

1. Introduction
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-ppc.xml?part=1&chap=1
2. Choosing the Right Installation Medium
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-ppc.xml?part=1&chap=2
3. Configuring your Network
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-ppc.xml?part=1&chap=2

The first three chapters are summarized in the following section.

What I did, step by step:

- plug FireWire HD to the PowerPC.
- plug Ethernet cable (dhcp will work and internet access is working in my case)
- insert CD "install-ppc-minimal-2005.1"
- boot PowerBook, pressing 'C' once bell sounds to boot from CD
- Ay CD boot prompt:
Code:
  # ppc32 dofirewire

(..
In my case I continue the install from a SSH connection, so:
- Start sshd, set root password and connect from a remote ssh client
Code:
  # /etc/init.d/sshd start
  # passwd
..)
- Verify Firewire HD access is available.
Code:
livecd ~ # dmesg

Note that in my case have already partitions in my firewire, but that doesn't matter as I'll erase the whole firewire HD.

- I go directly to 'Preparing the Disks' on the handbook, as the network setup is correct (dhcp) in my case.

4. Preparing the Disks
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-ppc.xml?part=1&chap=4

- Creating partitions
As I'm installing onto FireWire drive then MY TARGET hard drive is: /dev/sda In my case I'll setup using the default "Using mac-fdisk (Apple)" mechanism to Partition my external Firewire Disk.

Code:
livecd ~ # mac-fdisk /dev/sda      <=== !!! IMPORTANT: don't use /dev/hda

1st I've deleted all existing partitions (using 'd' delete partition and 'i' initialize partition map to erase the whole disk), to be sure that the complete external Firewire Disk will be used for Linux.

Next, I've created the recommened partitions as per the handbook, with three linux partitions (boot, swap and root rest of the disk):

1) Create an Apple_Bootstrap partition by using b.
Code:
   Command (? for help): b
   First block: 2p

2) Now create a swap partition by pressing c.
- For size, in my case I have 1G of RAM, so I dedicat 1024M for swap.
- Name: swap
Code:
   Command (? for help): c
   First block: 3p
   Length (in blocks, kB (k), MB (M) or GB (G)): 1G
   Name of partition: swap

3) Create the root partition (rest of the disk) by pressing c.
Size: enter 4p again (so rest of the disk)
Name: root
Code:

   Command (? for help): c
   First block: 4p
   Length (in blocks, kB (k), MB (M) or GB (G)): 4p
   Name of partition: root

4) Write, exit and run again mac-fdisk to verify:
Code:
   Command (? for help): w
   :
   Write partition map? [n/y]: y
   Command (? for help): q
   livecd ~ # mac-fdisk /dev/sda
   Command (? for help): p
   /dev/sda
           #                    type name                 length   base     ( size )  system
   /dev/sda1     Apple_partition_map Apple                    63 @ 1        ( 31.5k)  Partition map
   /dev/sda2         Apple_Bootstrap bootstrap              1600 @ 64       (800.0k)  NewWorld bootblock
   /dev/sda3         Apple_UNIX_SVR2 swap                2097152 @ 1664     (  1.0G)  Linux swap
   /dev/sda4         Apple_UNIX_SVR2 root               76041344 @ 2098816  ( 36.3G)  Linux native
   Block size=512, Number of Blocks=78140160
   DeviceType=0x0, DeviceId=0x0

- Creating File Systems

Code:
livecd ~ # mkfs.ext3 /dev/sda4
livecd ~ # mkswap /dev/sda3
Setting up swapspace version 1, size = 1073737 kB
livecd ~ # swapon /dev/sda3
livecd ~ # mkdir /mnt/gentoo
livecd ~ # mount /dev/sda4 /mnt/gentoo

- Verify date and set it correctly if it's wrong.
Code:
# date

5. Installing Gentoo Installation files
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-ppc.xml?part=1&chap=5

- Installing the stage3 tarball onto my system.

NOTE: Here I tried to eject the 2005.1 CD and mount 2006.0 universal CD but doing so ended with a problem, the 'tar' command was failing: 'segmentation fault'. (probably due to unmounting incorrectly the 2005.1). So, I rebooted with 2005.1 again. This time I choosed the following options just to be safe, but unsure if it was important anyway.

Code:
boot: ppc32 dofirewire nol3 docache

Then I redo the ssh part and obviously jump directly into this point (didn't redo the partitions) So, after boot and sshd was running I continued like:

Code:
livecd ~ # swapon /dev/sda3
livecd ~ # mount /dev/sda4 /mnt/gentoo/

I then mounted the 2006.0 universal CD in another Linux boxed accessible through my local LAN.

Code:
livecd ~ # cd /mnt/gentoo/
livecd gentoo # links http://x.x.x.x/2006.0/

Downloaded the stage3 image, exited links, and uncompress it:

Code:
livecd gentoo # tar xvjpf stage3-g4-2006.0.tar.bz2

- Install the latest Portage:

Code:
livecd ~ # cd /mnt/gentoo/
livecd gentoo # links http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/mirrors.xml

Go to gentoo/snapshots/ and download the latest portage-<date>.at.bz2

Code:
livecd gentoo # tar xvjf portage-<date>.tar.bz2 -C /mnt/gentoo/usr

- Configuring the Compile Options

Note that I didn't touch the default options that come with the prebuilt stage3 I just decompress, as I assume those are the most stable and optimized for my G4.

Code:
 livecd ~ # cat /mnt/gentoo/etc/make.conf
 # These settings were set by the catalyst build script that automatically built this stage
 # Please consult /etc/make.conf.example for a more detailed example
 CFLAGS="-O2 -mcpu=G4 -mtune=G4 -maltivec -mabi=altivec -fno-strict-aliasing -pipe"
 CHOST="powerpc-unknown-linux-gnu"
 CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"

6. Installing the Gentoo Base System
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-ppc.xml?part=1&chap=6

- I setup my correct mirrors in /mnt/gentoo/etc/make.conf
- Copy resolv.conf and mount proc and bind to prepare for chroot

Code:
livecd ~ # cd /mnt/gentoo/etc
livecd etc # cp /etc/resolv.conf .
livecd etc # mount -t proc none /mnt/gentoo/proc
livecd etc # mount -o bind /dev /mnt/gentoo/dev
livecd etc # chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash
livecd / # env-update
>>> Regenerating /etc/ld.so.cache...
livecd / # source /etc/profile
livecd / # export PS1="(chroot) $PS1"
(chroot) livecd / #

- Synchronize portage

Code:
(chroot) livecd / # emerge --sync

- My Profile

Code:
(chroot) livecd / # ls -FGg /etc/make.profile
lrwxrwxrwx  1 57 May 11 11:12 /etc/make.profile -> ../usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/ppc/ppc32/2006.0/G4/

- Set my USE variable
Here I'm using the following similar to an AMD64 box I have. As this is my first PPC gentoo install, I'm not sure if I'm missing something important. Anyway, your options maybe are completely different.

Code:
chroot) livecd / # cat /etc/make.conf
:
USE="alsa cdr dvd tcltk aalib nls spell oggvorbis mp3 ppds gimpprint dv quicktime nptl nptlonly multilib network unicode cjk leim font-server wxgtk1 gtk2 encode cdparanoia divx4linux truetype kde gnome gtk"

- Change the GLIBC Locales (I'm based in Spain, and spanish keyboard)

Code:
(chroot) livecd / # mkdir -p /etc/portage
(chroot) livecd / # echo "sys-libs/glibc userlocales" >> /etc/portage/package.use
(chroot) livecd / # cat /etc/locales.build
:
en_US/ISO-8859-1
en_US.UTF-8/UTF-8
es_ES/ISO-8859-1
es_ES@euro/ISO-8859-15
es_ES.UTF-8/UTF-8
es_ES.UTF-8@euro/UTF-8

7. Configuring the Kernel
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-ppc.xml?part=1&chap=7

I'm going to go through the manual Kernel install as that's what I always do with Gentoo.
I recommend you reading this chapter in the manual if you are unsure.

Code:
(chroot) livecd / # cp /usr/share/zoneinfo/Europe/Madrid /etc/localtime

(chroot) livecd / # USE="-doc symlink" emerge gentoo-sources
(chroot) livecd / # cd /usr/src/linux
(chroot) livecd linux # make pmac32_defconfig

I check my current pci and modules (from the livecd session) in orther to know
what I need to configure in the kernel

Code:
livecd ~ # lspci
:
livecd ~ # lsmod
:
livecd ~ #

(chroot) livecd linux # make menuconfig

I configured my kernel, reviewed all options, compared with actual modules loaded, with pci recognized hardware and read carefully the chapter in the hanbbook. I took care of setting the Firewire options as (*) and not as (M)odule.
:

Code:
(chroot) livecd linux # make && make modules_install
(chroot) livecd linux # cd /usr/src/linux
(chroot) livecd linux # cp vmlinux /boot/vmlinux-2.6.16-gentoo-r5

Find out which modules I've compiled in and want to autoload on next boot:
Code:
(chroot) livecd linux # find /lib/modules/<kernel version>/ -type f -iname '*.o' -or -iname '*.ko'

Then I added only few of them into the autoload file. I'm only interested on Ethernet for the next boot, so I'll have to come back here probably :-)

Code:
(chroot) livecd linux # nano -w /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6

8. Configuring your System
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-ppc.xml?part=1&chap=8

Code:
- Configure fstab
/dev/sda4               /               ext3            noatime         0 1
/dev/sda3               none            swap            sw              0 0
/dev/cdroms/cdrom0      /mnt/cdrom      iso9660         noauto,user,ro  0 0
proc                    /proc           proc            defaults        0 0
shm                     /dev/shm        tmpfs           nodev,nosuid,noexec     0 0

- Hostname, Domainname etc. Note these are samples similar to my case

Code:
(chroot) livecd ~ # nano -w /etc/conf.d/hostname
HOSTNAME="thename"

(chroot) livecd ~ # nano -w /etc/conf.d/domainname
OVERRIDE=1
DNSDOMAIN="mydomain.org"

(chroot) livecd ~ # nano -w /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1       thename.mydomain.org localhost locahost.localdomain thename

(chroot) livecd ~ # nano -w /etc/conf.d/net

config_eth0=( "192.168.1.4 netmask 255.255.255.0 brd 192.168.1.255" )
routes_eth0=( "default gw 192.168.1.1" )

(chroot) livecd ~ # rc-update add net.eth0 default
(
chroot) livecd ~ # USE="-X" emerge pcmcia-cs

(chroot) livecd ~ # rc-update add pcmcia default

(chroot) livecd ~ # passwd
New UNIX password:
Retype new UNIX password:
passwd: password updated successfully

(chroot) livecd ~ # nano -w /etc/rc.conf
(chroot) livecd ~ # nano -w /etc/conf.d/keymaps
 KEYMAP="-u es"
(chroot) livecd ~ # nano -w /etc/conf.d/clock
 CLOCK="UTC"

9. Installing Necessary System Tools
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-ppc.xml?part=1&chap=9

Code:
(chroot) livecd ~ # emerge syslog-ng
(chroot) livecd ~ # rc-update add syslog-ng default

(chroot) livecd ~ # emerge vixie-cron
(chroot) livecd ~ # rc-update add vixie-cron default

(chroot) livecd ~ # emerge slocate

(chroot) livecd ~ # emerge dhcpcd

10. Configuring the Bootloader
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-ppc.xml?part=1&chap=10

Now that the kernel is configured and I have a NewWorld Apple I need to configure the Bootloader "yaboot"

Code:
# exit  # this will exit the chroot
# mount -o bind /dev /mnt/gentoo/dev
# mount -o bind /sys /mnt/gentoo/sys
# chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash
# /usr/sbin/env-update && source /etc/profile
:
(chroot) livecd ~ # emerge yaboot

- Configuring /etc/yaboot.conf

Due to the fact that I'm booting from firewire then I cannot use 'yabootconfig', so I'll do it manually:

Code:
(chroot) livecd etc # cat yaboot.conf
boot=/dev/sda2
ofboot=/pci@f4000000/firewire@e/node@00d0010d0000e4d3/sbp-2@4008/disk@0:2
device=/pci@f4000000/firewire@e/node@00d0010d0000e4d3/sbp-2@4008/disk@0:
partition=4
delay=10
timeout=40
install=/usr/lib/yaboot/yaboot
magicboot=/usr/lib/yaboot/ofboot

image=/boot/vmlinux-2.6.16-gentoo-r5
        label=Linux
        root=/dev/sda4
        read-only

(chroot) livecd etc # mkofboot -v
mkofboot: Create hfs filesystem on /dev/sda2? [y/N] y
mkofboot: Creating HFS filesystem on /dev/sda2...
mkofboot: Installing first stage bootstrap /usr/lib/yaboot/ofboot onto /dev/sda2...
mkofboot: Installing primary bootstrap /usr/lib/yaboot/yaboot onto /dev/sda2...
mkofboot: Installing /etc/yaboot.conf onto /dev/sda2...
mkofboot: Setting attributes on ofboot...
mkofboot: Setting attributes on yaboot...
mkofboot: Setting attributes on yaboot.conf...
mkofboot: Blessing /dev/sda2 with Holy Penguin Pee...
mkofboot: Installation complete.

If you change yaboot.conf after the Apple_bootstrap partition has been created, you can update the settings by running

Code:
  # ybin -v

10.f. Rebooting the System

Exit the chrooted environment, unmount all and reboot

Code:
# exit
livecd ~# umount /mnt/gentoo/proc /mnt/gentoo/dev /mnt/gentoo/sys /mnt/gentoo
livecd ~# reboot

Up to now I'm only able to boot into my Firewire HD from OpenFirmware, as soon as I discover how to do it better I'll post it here.

Code:
 Connect FW HD
 Boot PowerBook G4
 Press: opt+cmd+o+f when bell sounds and keep all pressed till indicated.

 Some commands to see the OF Path to my firewire disk:
  dev /
  ls
  devalias

 To boot I'm using:
 boot fw@e/node@00d0010d0000e4d3/sbp-2@4008/disk@0:2 \\yaboot

Once booted I've logged in and launched the following emerge, so my box is compiling since
yesterday night, as the number of packages it's going to install due to dependencies is
really high :-)

Code:
myname ~ # emerge -v links mplayer mozilla-firefox kde gnome nmap ethereal tcpdump

--

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

NOTE 1: NEED TO REBOOT LIVECD WHILE INSTALLING
I needed to reboot from the LiveCD while in the middle of the install, with my FireWire HD already partitioned, so just wanted to continue with the setup:

Code:
boot: ppc32 dofirewire nol3 docache
# swapon /dev/sda3
# mount /dev/sda4 /mnt/gentoo
# mount -t proc none /mnt/gentoo/proc
# mount -o bind /dev /mnt/gentoo/dev
# mount -o bind /sys /mnt/gentoo/sys

# passwd
# /etc/init.d/sshd start

from another terminal use a ssh client and:
# chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash
# /usr/sbin/env-update && source /etc/profile
# export PS1="(chroot) $PS1"
(chroot) livecd / #
