Hi all,
i've got a PowerMac G5 2.0GHz dual core with an nVidia GeForce 6600 LE. I've succesfully installed gentoo with the arch keyword "ppc64"
My problem now is that fonts are "blurred", this happens both in console and X, but in console it is sporadic (not always and not all text shown in the console) and switching vt or select the corrupted text with gpm redraw it correctly; in X the text is systematically corrupted and also some "lines" like borders of the widget, giving focus to a widget usually restore it.
I've installed 2006.0 profile, compiled the latest gentoo-sources (2.6.16-r6) with support to both the openfirmware framebuffer and nvidia framebuffer, tried to boot with various "video" kernel parameters. The X server is 6.8.2-r6 and the DE is xfce4.

Anyone know something about it? looked everywhere, found nothing... very frustrating

have you tried booting with video=ofonly ?

Also I believe you should be using powerpc as your arch...that might be doing something

Check out https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-458059.html

It seems it might cause some weird glitches if you use the wrong arch...So look into that

And I wouldn't know about the vga= settings at all

tetsujin:

The gentoo "arch keyword" ppc64 is completely different from the topic you posted there, which is regarding the ARCH the kernel is built for.

veonline:

Make sure you've got your monitor plugged into the correct port on the video card, on dual head cards, sometimes issues like this can occur. You could try a newer kernel, the nvidia framebuffer isn't all that realiable. :p

i'll check that when i get home, but i'm quite sure it is the right head (it is marked 1 near the plug)

EDIT: checked and is the right plug, so i repeat what stated below...

i think it is some boot paramenters...
anyway i've noticed that during the services startup the cursor start to blink some line upon the current line printed, and this happen when start the consolefont service...

i've read the Documentation/svga.txt in order to find a suitable kernel boot parameters but i found
Quote:
This small document describes the "Video Mode Selection" feature which
allows the use of various special video modes supported by the video BIOS. Due
to usage of the BIOS, the selection is limited to boot time (before the
kernel decompression starts) and works only on 80X86 machines.
...and works only on 80X86 machines 8O

i emerged fbset, locked in the man page that spoke about a very big database of modes in /etc/fb.modes but that file doesn't exist... but what left me astonished is that there are no devices /etc/fb* ... i'm using the framebuffer or not? if i'm using it as i should (i've set built-in in the kenrel options) where is the device? :?

getting more and more lost ... 'cause of the electromagnetism? :P
