I installed a CDRW drive Model=SONY CD-RW CRX800E into my iBook and try to play DVD movies.
It is just a little bit choppy. One can watch a movie but it's just a bit annoying that some frames are dropped (thats the only way to keep AV synchronized). I tried with xine and gmplayer. Curiously gmplayer takes a lot of time (minutes) to start, but then it's playing nearly the same performance like xine. Therfore and because of the usage and zoom capabilities I prefer xine.

I tried all options within xine, with or without double buffering, xv, alsa. Some part of the xine config:
Code:
audio.driver:alsa
audio.a52.surround_downmix:1
audio.device.alsa_front_device:default
audio.device.alsa_mixer_name:Master
audio.device.esd_latency:-30000
video.driver:xv
video.device.xv_double_buffer:0
video.output.disable_exact_alphablend:1
video.output.xv_deinterlace_method:linearblend
video.output.opengl_renderer:2D_Tex_Tiled
video.processing.ffmpeg_pp_quality:0
media.dvd.language:de
media.dvd.region:2
media.dvd.readahead:0
engine.buffers.audio_num_buffers:1500
engine.buffers.video_num_buffers:900
engine.performance.memcpy_method:libc

Curiously native OSX 10.4 ( leave a small copy of it for the case of need, vga-out and tv stil doesn't work with 2.6.15) shows kind of the same performance playing with mplayer or vlc, subtly a bit more choppy.

It doesn't matter if I play of a ripped version on harddisk or DVD. using_dma is 1 for both.
CPU usage is at topmost. By the way xvid, SVCD and .mpg is just playing fine at half cpu usage.

I'm just wondering. Even the nice green G3-466 limeWire SE iBook was called a portable DVD-Player in his day, so playback should be possible.

what gui and version of X are you using?
Additionally, are you trying to run anything else while playing?

perhaps run top while playing a dvd to see what specifically is pulling your resources...

I couldn't stand and tried again with OSX (I never use it usually):
mplayer and vlc are still the same, it's just too slow and not watchable.
But the Apple DVD-Player plays just fine.

mplayer and xine here on linux are watchable, but DVD isn't really smooth. I tried around with disabling deinterlace and postprocessing to minimum.
