Hi guys,

After "emerge --update --newuse --deep world; revdep-rebuild" in April, it happened that when I clicked on a menu (e.g. "File") in Firefox or Thunderbird, the drop-down menu did not display. I could still quit with "Alt+F Q", but the user interface menus still do not display at all. After upgrading most of everything again today (16 May), the menus still don't work.

I've tried deleting the configs, and running firefox from xinit instead of gnome, but I still can't get menus like "File" to display when I click on them.

Thunderbird and Firefox have stacks of dependences, and I suspect something is messed on my system involving some libraries helping their XUL interface.

Does anyone know enough about Firefox/Thunderbird to tell me what could be causing this symptom?

System info: Gentoo unstable on 2005 iBook G4

Thank you

Hi,

There are actually very few direct dependencies for Firefox and Thunderbird. mozilla-launcher, nss and nspr are the common direct deps for them, so you could try unmerging those packages and re-emerging them. Indirect dependencies would, of course, depend on what you had installed before. The major external libraries would be things like gtk+, which would affect a lot of other programs if they were screwed up.

When you said you deleted the configs, does that mean deleting the ~/.mozilla/firefox and ~/.thunderbird directories? Have you tried creating a new profile and running under that?

Hi guys,

Re deleting configs, I meant ~/.mozilla and ~/.thunderbird (even tried running it via xinit as root)

Re CFLAGS, mine are -O2 -mcpu=G4 -maltivec -fno-strict-aliasing -pipe

firefox had use flags of +gnome +xinerama - am now trying with those flags removed (pls wait, will see if it works)

(other flags are +ipv6 +java -mozdevelop -xprint)

Other ideas?

Hi again,

I've figure it out. Tipped off by my +xinerama use flag, I tried enabling xinerama in xorg.conf (usually I leave it disabled unless I'm extending the desktop onto an external monitor).

I set in xorg.conf

Code:

Section "ServerFlags"
Option "Xinerama" "True"
...
EndSection

and lo and behold, the menus reappeared...

This also fixed my other problem of gdm, wdm etc. crashing all the time (so I had to use startx)

May someone else find this weird experience useful.

P.S. Now I just need to get Airport Extreme (bcm4318) working with wpa_supplicant WPA-PSK and TKIP (works for open wlans) and all will be happy for my iBook...
