Hi, after successfully installed and boot from my External Firewire HD using 2.6.16-gentoo-r5 kernel, I've built new kernels using vanilla source 2.6.17-rc3 and rc4, and with both I can't boot, as the external firewire HD is not recognized and system panics.
I used the same configuration on the 2.6.16 and 2.6.17 kernels.

Has anybody else seen the same problem?

Thanks,

Luis

I vaguely recall from a discussion on Debian that firewire booting on Linux is very difficult because the firewire drivers are loaded after the boot process has begun. I would love to get this working to see Linux on my eMac, but I am sticking with Gentoo on a partition on the iBook.

luispa, can you check the messages the kernel prints before the panic and see if it's being found or if there are any errors it prints when loading?

Hi,

First of all: I booted today to grab the 'kernel messages' for JoseJX and unlogically ALL kernels are booting and recognizing the Firewire external HD.

As a reminder, BEFORE:
x 2.6.16-gentoo-r5 kernel booted and recognized external firewire HD.
x 2.6.17-rc3 booted and didn't recognize external firewire HD
x 2.6.17-rc4 booted and didn't recognize external firewire HD
x 2.6.17-rc4 (w/ manual modifications by myself) booted and didn't recognize external firewire HD

But, TODAY: (things that I did in order)
x 2.6.17-rc3 boots and recognizes firewire HD
x 2.6.17-rc4 boots and recognizes firewire HD
x 2.6.17-gentoo-r5 boots and recognizes firewire HD

I'm totally lost and feeling stupid. This are the only two things I've done differently:
1) I plugged the HD one second after the bell sound,
2) I have today a Wacom USB tablet connected.

With these two differences the boot prompt appeared and then I tried the 2.6.17-rc3. Imagine my surprise when I saw it recognizing the external HD and completing the boot process.

JoseJX,

The only thing I can say from top of my memory is that kernel was probably not initializing or recognizing the ieee1394 HD, as the /dev/sda wasn't available and so couldn't mount root.

I have (now) the 3 dmesg ouput from the 3 kernels and the diff's, if you want me to post them here, in all of them the /dev/sda is available but with small curious differences that maybe are usefull to understand something about this issue.

I would like to understand what's going on here. Is it possible that it is related to something written in the firmware between boots that now helps?. I'll try to reproduce anyway the old (now) problem, plug-in and un-pluging devices...

Luis
