Hi!

I'm just asking this question (possibly again) to get a feeling on how the range of ebuilds is on PPC.
I like what I see in Gnome 2.14, and judging by the Online Package Overview, they have gotten just as far with the ebuilds for gnome 2.14 on ppc, as they have on x86.

But has anyone experiences with trying the new Gnome 2.14 on PPC? Namely a Powerbook 15" Alu w/SuperDrive.

Any feedback is appreaciated.

for me, gnome 2.14 works greatly on my ibook, but except gnome-power-manager and hal.
Hal often crashes especially when it wakes up from suspending to disk or mem.
When hal crashes, g-p-m also passes away.

oh, okay. but it's sufficient just to restart those few services if they crash, right?

my main reason for switching is because the Mono-development community seems to be very focused on Gtk#/Gnome. And I'd like to be part of that, rather than sitting here with my Cocoa# and getting nothing done :P

edit: also, did you use a particular guide for installing gnome 2.14?

I'm running gnome 2.14.1 on an iMac G5 - (2.6.17-rc3 ppc64 kernel with 32-bit userland, to be precise).

It's working quite well so far, aside from a catastrophic failure of the clock applet (something I miss much more than I thought I would).

But overall it seems pretty good.

jaeger63: what about the missing macromedia flash binaries---how do you cope with that?

Well, I'm not aware of any alternative for the macromedia flash plugins on Linux ppc. So I do without, is all.

It means any website that requires them shows up with a flash plug-in where the flash content is supposed to be. This is either a horrible failure or its greatest feature, depending on your point of view.

But I must point out that I'm not at all a Gnome power-user. I use mostly the base applications and like the clean, uncluttered desktop Gnome provides. There's a vast collection of Gnome applications that I don't use or even know what they are, frankly. I don't know how well they work on 2.14 ppc as I've never tried to build much beyond the base applications.

oh, haha. now I come to think about it, I don't really use any flash sites anyway.

with regard to your comment on application variaties on PPC, I'm hoping for the best. the main reason I'm moving is because of Mono and Gtk#, which has really caugt my attention.

any users with experience using these on Gnome/PPC---please, comment back:)
