Hello all ,

Has anyone had any luck compiling mythtv as a frontend on PPC (under gentoo linux)??

I have a G3 900mhz ibook that I want to use, i have found various binaries for OSX , but they are far from perfect and aimed more for the G4 crowd, and I dont like osx.

Interestingly, under mythfrontend on OSX I can watch recordings which have been at a lower quality / bit rate quite well. Its just the stuff thats recorded at a higher bitrate / quality that stutter like mad. Im not sure why, I have plenty of network bandwidth, and always thought that decoding a higher bit rate video would be less cpu intensive than decoding something at lower. Im thinking I must be wrong and that chain of thought more appropriate to the actual encoding itself.

I take it the silence means not many are using mythtv on ppc.

As a matter of fact, I'm not either, but I'd be quite surprised if there were any real difficulties running the front end on PPC. I run mythtv on gentoo x86 and I've built it on FreeBSD, but so far I've never bothered building it on my PPC box.

Building the myth application itself is quite straightforward. Any difficulties are usually related to hardware support of the peripherals, either the TV tuner, getting X to run on the TV-out of the video card, or the remote control. If you just want to run mythfrontend on your regular display I'd be quite surprised if there's any problem at all on PPC.

I've got mythtv to compile under ubuntu linux fairly easily.

Gentoo is a bit difficult as the compiler flags/options are hard coded in the ebuild file. Editing this may yield some joy, but I have not tried.

Myth Frontend is so much more respoonsive under linux than OSX for my little G3. Would recommend anyone who is struggling with a slow CPU to move away from the heavy OSX.

I recently (1 month ago) compiled mythtv on PPC with 7450 CFLAGS w/o issue. I don't recall the exact USE flags though, and it was definitely with ~glibc-2.3, ~gcc-3.4.6, and ~xorg-x11-6.9.0.

I had to recompile qt-3* with USE=mysql first.
Something similar to: USE="alsa altivec arts dvb dvd ieee1394 opengl vorbis"

I compiled both the frontend and backend. The emerge took almost as long as compiling qt itself!

The app worked relatively OK, but I moved my efforts to an x86 machine and uninstalled mythtv from my PPC.
