Came on the same error after clean 2006.0 install and emerge --sync.
Changed ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~ppc" and added -mlong-double-128 to CFLAGS.
Wouldn't emerge glibc-2.4-r3, tried to rebuild gcc-4.1.1 with that, and received "GMP with MPFR" error.

Finally, used the /usr/portage/scripts/bootstrap.sh script. That built glibc-2.4-r3 and gcc with the following flags (altivec nls bootstrap).

Still couldn't emerge gcc-4.1.1 with fortran. Changed gmp to version 4.1.4-r3 and mpfr to 2.2.0_p8 and
Code:
#rm -rf /var/tmp/portage/gcc-4.1.1
.

As of now that seems to be working. Will update the bug report later if this works.

PS: prior to using bootstrap.sh, updated glibc to 2.3.6-r3.

glibc-2.4 needs to be build with gcc-4.1.1. So first upgrade gcc, then upgrade glibc.

It should also be noted that once you've installed gcc-4.1.1, you need to actually set it up as your default compiler. This is done with gcc-config. See http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gcc-upgrading.xml for more details.

Any ideas? It seems crossdev tool compiles gcc-4.1 before, isn't it?

Can this be updated, or a note go into the upgrade guide for people upgrading from pre-4.x.x versions?
It seems a note in the upgrade guide might be the way to go.
