Akridas,

Booting from USB requires :-
1) A BIOS that supports booting from USB
2) A kernel that has USB support either built in or in its initrd
3) The kernel paramter rootdelay=<seconds>
The value <seconds> allows the USB subsystem to be started before the kernel attempts to mount its rootfs.
Vales from 7 to 30 are reported to work but are hardware dependant.

Booting from USB is a little more involved but perfectly possible.

======= Edit ========

Oops, misssed the PPC bit.

You can install to a USB device, instructions for this are in the PPC handbook. I'm not sure about PPC64, but since they use OpenFirmware as well, the instructions will be similar.
