First, I'm an x86er, but a quick search for your hardware provides this information for your specific question:

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-ppc-faq.xml#sound

Hopefully this helps.

Make sure you have everything here: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-ppc-faq.xml#alsa compiled in. I have the same type of iMac and my sound wouldn't work until the drivers were compiled into the kernel.

Did you use alsa or oss?
If you used the external alsa-driver or in-kernel with modules, confirm that the modules are loaded with lsmod.
If not modprobe dmasound_pmac for oss or snd-powermac for alsa. If you are using oss you need a program to unmute the speakers, I use kmix, for alsa you can use alsamixer or amixer.
I couldn't get sound working properly with the recent alsa driver so am using oss.

Hope this helps.
