So I had my IBook all setup for a while now, I went to do an upgrade and was updating packages for a few days. I wasn't finished, but turned it off last night to give it a break. I boot up this morning and I get a kernel panic. I assume its from the new kernel which I upgraded to 2.6.16, but I used the same name for the new kernel - vmlinux. And I didn't change the yaboot.conf or touch anything else. So I tried downgrading the kernel back to the one I used before, same error, redid my yaboot.conf, same error. I finally see now after watching the kernel messages on boot that for some reason the kernel is making my CD-RW hda and the HD hdc, so once it looks for vmlinux on /dev/hda4 obviously it doesn't exist.

My yaboot.conf -

boot=/dev/hda5
ofboot=:hd5
device=hd:

partition=4
delay=15
timeout=30
defaultos=linux
install=/usr/lib/yaboot/yaboot
magicboot=/usr/lib/yaboot/ofboot

image=/boot/vmlinux
label=Gentoo
read-only
root=/dev/hda4

macosx=hd:3
enablecdboot
enableofboot

My partition list -
hda2 - swap
hda3 - OSX
hda4 - Gentoo
hda5 - bootstrap

I am running ybin -v after every yaboot.conf update I try, and it's not giving me any kinds of errors other than '/proc filesystem not mounted, nvram will not be updated'

Any ideas?

Well as I thought it was a simple kernel config I missed. Apparently the CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDE_PMAC_ATA100FIRST option tells the kernel to make the HD hda, like I wanted it, so a simple change to Y on that allowed me to boot again. But of course now my X won't start, and my keyboard doesn't work. I used my former 2.6.15 config and just did a make oldconfig for the new options, so I don't see what kernel options I could've messed up. Maybe something with the new modular Xorg? Anyone else run into this with the 2.6.16 kernel?
