I was able to successfully boot the PPC64 minimal install cd on an old IBM RS/6000 44P Model 170. Looking at /proc/cpuinfo, the machine is a CHRP machine. I followed the instructions on installing yaboot, but when I reboot, all it shows is a message "Starting software" then a spinner that spins for a bit then freezes. About 30 secs. later the system reboots, only to repeat this process. Does anyone know how I can get this thing to work? The /etc/yaboot.conf file is identical to the one in the ppc64 install handbook except that the device line has been changed to reflect the output of ofpath /dev/sda, and the partition and root lines now reflect that the root partition is /dev/sda3 not /dev/sda2.

The problem turned out to be that the Open Firmware wanted a PReP boot partition less than 3MB. I read this in the forums after doing a some more digging.

I also had some fun getting yaboot working on my Power3 RS/6000.

The problem I had was that the "PReP Boot partition" was to big. it has to be smaller than about 8MB. I made it the length 1 block and yaboot started.

So, if you also have a PReP Boot partition that is bigger than about 8MB please follow this steps:

- boot the live cd again
- delete that partition
- create a new partition that is small enough (you might get some free blocks)
- if you have swap on the second partiton you can increase the size of that partition
- now do that "dd if=/usr/lib/yaboot/yaboot.chrp of=/dev/sdXX" think and try to boot

If this doesn't help you might want to join #gentoo-ppc64 on freenode. stick around. it might take some time until you get an response.

Regards,

Markus
