Ok I bought an Asus WL-167g 'cause I heard it would work with linux and it does, sort of. The RT2570 driver (from cvs) compiles fine right out of the box but, as soon as I insert the module my system becomes very unresponsive like under heavy load. It won't even shut down.

So I tried the ural driver. wouldn't compile, did some googleing and edited the source now it compiles and works sort of. I some times have trouble connecting to some networks, I haven't been able to get it to work with any type of encrypted network even if I'm the one setting up the AP. (so my home network is open.) :( I can't scan for networks and I can't get any signal strength info at all (the signal and noise levels stay the same no matter where I go.) I get these:

Code:

ural: module license 'BSD' taints kernel.
Symbol usb_register_driver is being used by a non-GPL module, which will not be allowed in the future
Please see the file Documentation/feature-removal-schedule.txt in the kernel source tree for more details.
Symbol usb_deregister is being used by a non-GPL module, which will not be allowed in the future
Please see the file Documentation/feature-removal-schedule.txt in the kernel source tree for more details.

eth1 (WE) : Driver using old /proc/net/wireless support, please fix driver !

Oh and the driver is no longer supported and highly unstable. I remove the module whenever I'm not going to use it for a while or for large tasks like compiling. but this means I must emerge -f then rmmod ural then emerge to install anything!
If anyone has any experiance with this and can help me out it would be great I've used linux & wifi for years but I'm a total newb when it comes to wifi on linux.

Option #2
I also have an old proxim harmony 802.11b pcmcia card (Prism2 suposedly) but just putting it in causes a crash. I don't think I have pcmcia configured right. It's an old G3 (333Mhz) Powerbook Lombard with (I believe a yenta bridge.)

Edit: just tried the rt2x00 driver.
This compiles fine and I can load the rt2500usb module. this gets me this:

Code:

PowerBook-G3 ~ # iwconfig
lo        no wireless extensions.

eth0      no wireless extensions.

wmaster0  IEEE 802.11g  ESSID:""
          Mode:Master  Frequency:2.412 GHz
          RTS thr:off   Fragment thr=2346 B
          Encryption key:off

wlan0     IEEE 802.11g  ESSID:""
          Mode:Managed  Frequency:2.412 GHz  Access Point: Not-Associated
          RTS thr:off   Fragment thr=2346 B
          Encryption key:off

but when I try to bring it up I get this:

Code:

PowerBook-G3 ~ # modprobe rt2500usb
PowerBook-G3 ~ # iwconfig wlan0 mode managed
PowerBook-G3 ~ # iwconfig wlan0 essid any
PowerBook-G3 ~ # ifconfig wlan0 up
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Input/output error
PowerBook-G3 ~ #

and when I try again I get this error instead:

Code:

PowerBook-G3 ~ # ifconfig wlan0 up
SIOCSIFFLAGS: No buffer space available
PowerBook-G3 ~ #

Please help

I used ural with WPA (dwl-g122 version b1, kernel 2.6.{11,12,13} and wpasupplicant version 0.4.2). But WEP did not work.
