I wonder why the screen dims while there is still mouse movement. Did I miss an option in the config or does the software expect that I'm typing when I want to watch the screen ;)

You're using Synaptics with the Appletouch driver. Synaptics doesn't pass through the mouse events, so pbbuttonsd doesn't see them. Take a look at this thread and patch: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-3283062.html#3283062

I have a nasty issue with pbbuttonsd. I routinely use a dual-head setup, the internal LCD and an external VGA monitor. I use the radeon driver, M10 card, with or without DRI, in merged framebuffer mode.

In xorg.conf, I used to try to enable DPMS for only the external monitor ( xorg 6.8, haven't tested reconfig of my current 7.1 ); however it appears that the driver can only do DPMS on all or no displays. So, I enable DPMS for both displays. What happens however is that the LCD display does a semi-random mixture of the following behavior:
(1) display sudden looses ability to adjust the brightness, and is effectively stuck at present level. decrease brightness setting to 0 and then back up, and then brightness level adjusts normal. This happens without DPMS blanking the screen. When this issue appears, even the dim 1/2 way on idle before blank doesn't happen.
(2) After DPMS blank, sometimes (1) occurs, sometimes display backlight remains off (with LCD color on), appearing almost black, until switching to-from a VT, or playing with the brightness buttons over and over
(3) Some other odd blanking situations where getting the Panel backlight to be come responsive again requires playing with keystrokes / buttons.

Currently, it seems that changing the following settings to 'yes' make the issue worse.
Code:

# snip from /etc/pbbuttonsd.conf
    UseFBBlank            = no
    DimFullyDark          = no
    LCD_AutoAdjust        = no              ; only on Aluminum PowerBooks
    LCD_FadingSpeed       = 1

The only way to make all LCD blanking issues disappear is to disable X11 DPMS. But if I do that, the external CRT will eventually burn out. Any ideas?
