I just emerged GTK+ 2.10 and it broke my Gnome desktop BUT i've managed to fix all the visible breakage, so i thought i'd share. Here is what I needed to do to get it back to how it was:

  • To emerge GTK I needed to unmask and ~keyword Cairo 1.20 by adding ">=x11-libs/cairo-1.20" to .unmask and .keywords
  • My gtk theme (a modified version of Clearlooks) died. Re-emerging "x11-themes/gtk-engines" fixed that. You probably need to recompile all your GTK engines.
  • My SVG desktop backgrounds and icons all broke, so I decided to add SVG to my use flags and --update --newuse'd world. Make sure you re-emerge "gnome-base/librsvg". I don't know how I was using SVG backgrounds and stuff before I had the svg use flag enabled but meh.
  • My icons and backgrounds were still not working, so I re-emerged "gnome-base/control-center" (it contains the background properties and gnome-settings-daemon that I think needed the rebuild) and this got my iconset in gnome-panel and my SVG desktop background working again.

I think the best method would be an emerge -e world but the above worked for me.

Coincedentally, I noticed a very slight reduction in memory usage on a fresh boot (I keep an eye on that sort of thing). i don't know if this is GTK related but i'm not complaining.

afaik gtk+ 2.10 broke ABI (version change from 2.4.0 to 2.10.0) so you should rebuild every package which installed files in /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.4.0

While compiling libgnomeui against GTK+ 2.10.0 I've got this error

So I don't think Gnome 2.14 and GTK+ 2.10 are working together well.
On the other hand libgnomeui 2.15.1 compiles fine.

I haven't recompiled libgnomeui, and now I daren't o_o

If i recall correctly GTK 2.10 incorporates alot of changes from Project Ridley, which could be why libgnomeui is effected.

Not exactly. I think the problem is with gnome-vfs filechoser backend. The ABI for filechoser have been rewriten to be asinc. So the backends have to be rewriten. The new gnome-vfs backend is included in libgnomeui-2.15*.

I use gnome 2.15.4 actualy, works prety well :)
Only problem : ruby-gnome2 bindings brackage....

Hi all,

I had the same problem with libgnomeui. So I try 2.16.0 version. The compilation appends fine and it works. But I had always WARNINGS like that when I opened a file with file-chooser for example.

Code:
** (gedit:28932): WARNING **: file_system_gnome_vfs=0x81aa180 still has handle=0x843a100 at finalization which is NOT CANCELLED!

** (gedit:28932): WARNING **: file_system_gnome_vfs=0x81aa180 still has handle=0x843a040 at finalization which is NOT CANCELLED!

I finally try the patch I found on https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=139598

No more Warnings, all works great (until now ;-) ).

I have manually added the patch in the 2.14.1 ebuild :

Just copy the patch that you can find here http://gentooexperimental.org/~genstef/dist/libgnomeui-file-chooser-2.14.1-2.15.1.patch.bz2
to /usr/portage/gnome-base/libgnomeui/files

Then just copy the ebuild and the Manifest (because of size Verification and MDA5,...)

libgnomeui-2.14.1.ebuild :
Code:
